THE FOUNDATION
"And that the said Constitution be never construed to authorize Congress =
.... to prevent the people of the United States, who are peaceable =
citizens, from keeping their own arms.... " --Samuel Adams=20
_____----********O********----______
PUBLISHER'S NOTE
The Patriot is pleased to introduce our new online store -- The Patriot =
Shop at http://patriotshop.us/catalog/. Our trademark bumper stickers, =
including our new slogans, "Flush the Johns in 2004" and "I'm not FONDA =
Kerry," are available as well as our Shields of Strength service tags!=20

INSIGHT
"At the day of Doom men shall be judged according to their fruits. It =
will not be said then, Did you believe? but, Were you doers, or talkers =
only?" --John Bunyan=20
_____----********O********----______
IChThUS IMPRIMIS
"As we enter this election season, the struggle for our culture's soul =
has simultaneously produced passivity and defeatism in some evangelical =
quarters and a shrill triumphalism in others. Neither response...is the =
proper Christian response. We can never retreat into our sanctuaries and =
neglect our civic responsibility to help set the moral tone of our =
culture. Leaving your neighbor in ignorance of his folly is inconsistent =
with the command to love him, and so political and cultural engagement =
are required for faithful believers. We are, I like to put it, to bring =
the influence of the City of God into the City of Man, working for =
justice and righteousness. ... The best citizens of the City of Man are =
those who remember that their true citizenship is in the City of God." =
--Charles Colson=20
_____----********O********----______
FAMILY
"Want to know how you're doing as a parent? Check out how your children =
are doing when it comes to minding their manners. ... How would children =
learn to avoid quarreling and whining? It is quite natural that they do =
so. Where would they learn to offer someone a seat if the bus is full? =
How would they learn that their chores are their jobs? How would they =
learn to speak when spoken to by adults, to say 'please,' 'thank you' =
and 'you're welcome'? God doesn't put us on Earth knowing these things. =
Children learn them when parents take the time to teach them and to =
enforce the rules. Absentee parenting, part-time parenting, parenting =
that says, 'Go to your room, watch television, get on the computer, =
amuse yourself because I have neither the time nor the inclination to =
make you do otherwise,' produces part-time results." --Rebecca Hagelin=20
_____----********O********----______
CULTURE
"'My truth is that I am a gay American,' announced Gov. James McGreevey =
to the people of New Jersey. ... That's such an exquisitely contemporary =
formulation: 'my' truth. Once upon a time, there was only 'the' truth. =
Now everyone gets his own -- or, as the governor put it, 'One has to =
look deeply into the mirror of one's soul and decide one's unique truth =
in the world.' For Jim McGreevey, his truth is that he's a gay American; =
for others in the Garden State, the truth about McGreevey is that he's a =
corrupt sexual harasser who put his lover on the state payroll in a =
critical homeland security post, and whose I-am-what-I-am confessional =
is a tactical feint that distracts the media sob sisters from the fact =
that, as his final service to the Democrat Party, he's resigned in such =
a way as to deny the people an early vote on his successor. We'll see =
whose truth prevails in the fullness of time." --Mark Steyn=20
_____----********O********----______
LIBERTY
"As predicted, the move to federalize marriage licenses is expanding to =
other areas presently reserved for state governments. On Monday, the =
September 11 Commission told Congress it should federalize the standards =
for obtaining a driver's license...in the name of national security, of =
course. Heck, what's the long-term loss of a little essential liberty =
when measured against a little temporary safety, right? Paging Dr. =
Franklin, Dr. Ben Franklin..." --Chuck Muth=20
"To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave =
them," warned George Mason=20
_____----********O********----______
ACT NOW
On the eve of the upcoming presidential election, the 1994 =
Clinton-Feinstein-Schumer gun-control regulations is scheduled to expire =
on 13 September, 2004. There are at least six bills reauthorizing =
Feinstein-Schumer pending in the Senate and House. Congress will return =
from its summer recess on 7 September and will be in session only four =
work-days before the sunset date. Fellow Patriots, let us urge our =
elected representatives to oppose H.R. 3831 and S. 2498 and any other =
legislation seeking to extend the so-called "assault-weapons" ban.=20
Please act now -- join more than 85,000 fellow Patriots on the =
frontlines in defense of our Constitutional liberties who have already =
signed a petition against Feinstein-Schumer renewal. Link to -- =

e-mail sent to this address will be counted as one signature for the =

THE GIPPER
"The war on poverty created a great new upper-middle class of =
bureaucrats that found they had a fine career as long as they could keep =
enough needy people there to justify their existence." --Ronald Reagan=20
_____----********O********----______
OPINION IN BRIEF
We miss the boat if we say it's the agenda of left-wingers and =
Democrats. According to Marxist doctrine, socialism is a stage of =
society between capitalism and communism where private ownership and =
control over property are eliminated. The essence of socialism is the =
attenuation and ultimate abolition of private property rights. Attacks =
on private property include, but are not limited to, confiscating the =
rightful property of one person and giving it to another to whom it =
doesn't belong. When this is done privately, we call it theft. When it's =
done collectively, we use euphemisms: income transfers or =
redistribution. It's not just left-wingers and Democrats who call for =
and admire socialism but right-wingers and Republicans as well. =
Republicans and right-wingers support taking the earnings of one =
American and giving them to farmers, banks, airlines and other failing =
businesses. Democrats and left-wingers support taking the earnings of =
one American and giving them to poor people, cities and artists. Both =
agree on taking one American's earnings to give to another; they simply =
differ on the recipients. This kind of congressional activity =
constitutes at least two-thirds of the federal budget. Regardless of the =
purpose, such behavior is immoral. It's a reduced form of slavery. After =
all, what is the essence of slavery? It's the forceful use of one person =
to serve the purposes of another person. When Congress, through the tax =
code, takes the earnings of one person and turns around to give it to =
another person in the forms of prescription drugs, Social Security, food =
stamps, farm subsidies or airline bailouts, it is forcibly using one =
person to serve the purposes of another. The moral question stands out =
in starker relief when we acknowledge that those spending programs =
coming out of Congress do not represent lawmakers reaching into their =
own pockets and sending out the money. Moreover, there's no tooth fairy =
or Santa Claus giving them the money. The fact that government has no =
resources of its very own forces us to acknowledge that the only way =
government can give one American a dollar is to first -- through =
intimidation, threats and coercion -- take that dollar from some other =
American." --Walter Williams=20
_____----********O********----______
GOVERNMENT
"Usually, politicians use 50-cent words to puff up two-bit ideas. When =
it comes to taking away people's land, they do the opposite. They use =
three phrases -- 'eminent domain,' 'economic development,' 'master plan' =
-- and they mean big money. A baseball stadium, or a strip mall, or a =
department store looks better -- to the politicians -- than whatever's =
already on a piece of property. So they take the property away and give =
it to someone else, whether the owner likes it or not. Eminent domain is =
supposed to let government do necessary things like build roads and run =
utility lines. Today, it's a way to beef up a town's tax base by =
replacing homes, small businesses -- even churches -- with high volume =
enterprises or gentrified housing. Take Elizabeth Fernando. She's lost =
three properties to the city of Indianapolis. First for an athletic =
facility. Then for a convention center. Now, they're taking her parking =
garage for -- get this -- parking! The city's restoring some 'historic' =
apartments next door, and wants a flat lot instead of a garage. =
Normandy, Missouri, pondered seizing a convent -- a convent! -- to put =
in a strip mall. Thankfully, a higher power intervened. Nearby St. Louis =
declared a building 'blighted' and seized it. Why? Because the owners =
refused to give its tenant, a department store, a new long-term =
lease...and the city fathers wanted that store to stay there. Eminent =
domain used to mean a necessary taking. These days, it just means =
political thievery."=20
--Paul Jacob=20
_____----********O********----______
BUSH CAMPAIGN JOURNAL
"We would not have gotten even this close to success without President =
Bush's courageous and inspired leadership. ... It is almost =
inconceivable that a President Gore or Kerry would have moved with such =
alacrity to confront our only too real enemies in both Afghanistan and =
Iraq." --Tony Blankley=20
_____----********O********----______
JFK DEMO-LITION DERBY
"Where does Kerry stand on Iraq? Depends on the day. On the overall war =
on terror, he spouts pleasant-sounding platitudes about getting more =
international cooperation and making better use of intelligence. But =
how? Not once has Kerry laid out a clear blueprint, nor should anyone =
expect one. Counterintuitively, Kerry is worse for the wear for not =
having clawed his way to a primary victory. He was not battle-tested in =
the sense of scrapping for support through good old-fashioned stump =
speeches and street fighting. He won because he was the best-organized =
candidate who didn't implode. Kerry came out of the primaries a =
survivor, not a winner. And unless Bush crashes -- spectacularly -- in =
the next three months, Kerry won't be one in November, either." --Joel =
Mowbray=20
_____----********O********----______
RE: THE LEFT
"Kerry will not release his medical records. Kerry will not release his =
military records. Kerry will not release records of the investigation =
conducted about his anti-war, anti-American activities, and Kerry will =
not release his IRS records which would show the source of his wealth, =
suggested as enormous. In short, Kerry will not produce any real =
evidence about his true character. He is suggesting, I suppose, that we =
should take his word for it. Or perhaps we should just guess. If Judge =
Judy heard Kerry's flimsy case, not only would she throw it out, she =
probably would fine Senator Kerry fifty dollars for annoying the court =
and wasting its precious time. In view of the absence of any real =
evidence, I think voters must assume Senator John Kerry's true character =
is highly questionable." --Gary Aldrich=20
_____----********O********----______
POLITICAL FUTURES
"Liberals are always going to be top heavy with crazy, flailing, =
conspiracy-theorists. Every Republican will always be a right-wing =
extremist to them. Accepting the basics of their hysterical arguments =
against conservatism by blacklisting conservatives from the Republican =
Convention may make a few liberal Republican senators feel more at home, =
but it bankrupts a philosophy and vision that we once thought could =
change the world for the better." --Shawn Macomber=20
_____----********O********----______
FOR THE RECORD
"We went into Iraq for the best of reasons, to end the threat of =
Saddam's WMD and to end his support of terrorist groups. Those who say =
Saddam wasn't hip-deep in terrorist activity are just plain wrong. The =
saddest fact about the Iraq campaign is that we delayed it for about six =
months while the UN fiddled and diddled about enforcing its disarmament =
resolutions. By doing that, we gave up the advantage of surprise and let =
Saddam have time to move his WMD and money and plan his own survival. We =
know that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the head al-Qaeda operative in Iraq, was =
there no later than September 2002. We gave Zarqawi six months to =
organize the insurgency that is now killing Americans. Iraq proved one =
thing: the UN is the antithesis of our policy of preempting terrorist =
operations. We have to choose between the diplomatic quagmire and =
preemption. Preemption is the only sensible choice." --Jed Babbin=20

"Thank you for your clear and concise analysis of the Gun-ban issue. I =
have forwarded this portion of The Patriot to everyone in my address =
book hoping to rally those who do understand and maybe to get through to =
those who do not!" --Laguna Hills, California=20
"The vexing question of Gun Control has again become subject of debate. =
I know that comparisons are odious, but this is a time as good as any to =
compare the Swiss Confederation with the City of Oakland in California. =
Switzerland has all the potential of a nasty little Bosnia. It is =
inhabited by two mutually antagonistic races, the Latin and the =
Teutonic. Further, it is linguistically divided into three mutually =
antagonistic nationalities, the German, and French and the Italians, and =
the German and French-speaking parts are religiously divided into two =
mutually and antagonistic Christian denominations, the Roman Catholic =
and the Calvinists, and to top it all off, every male between the ages =
of 20 through 50 after having finished his mandatory military services =
must keep an assault rifle at home and be prepared to arm himself and =
report to his assigned position at a moments notice...a minuteman in =
fact. Bearing this in mind it is reasonably to assume that Switzerland, =
a nation of about 7 million is awash in blood, but in the year 2003, =
there were less than 40 murders committed there whilst in the City of =
Oakland, California with a population of less than 400,000 the butcher's =
bill was 114. Why the difference? Could it be that Switzerland is a =
bourgeois democracy (dreadful words, so debased by Marxian venom that I =
scarcely dare use it) with its concomitant values of sobriety, thrift, =
obedience to the rules they themselves have voted into law, and above =
all the fact that they are the government, whilst in Oakland, governed =
by Utopian Marxists (no, I will not call them Liberals) with former =
governor Jerry 'Moonbeam' Brown at its helm and with all its gun =
controls the results of which are that there are 'hoods where guns rule =
at night. Of course, there might very well be other more pertinent =
explanations, if so; I'd like to hear about them." --San Francisco, =
California=20
"Guns are also, in effect, protected by the 5th Amendment. The left is =
redefining America's Founders' definition of property rights and =
achieving gun control by the spurious claim that government claims =
ownership of all weapons and can control who keeps them. "The Federal =
government has the absolute right to control all property," an opponent =
told me. Those who spout the view my opponent did will use any means =
possible to silence their opposition." --St. Paul, Minnesota=20
"As the old saying goes, "Gun control is hitting what you aim at." =
--Honolulu, Hawaii=20

"In regards to outside groups 'monitoring' our elections, ODIHR is not =
pronounced 'Oh dear'; it's French and pronounced 'odor'." --Ephrata, =

editions!=20
"Poor Ted Kennedy -- he was delayed by airport screeners. If the =
screeners were allowed to profile suspicious passengers, as Sen. Kennedy =
opposes, then, perhaps, fat old impatient white males could board in a =
more timely fashion." --Wheaton, Illinois=20
Editor's Reply: Mary Jo Kopechne, once again, could not be reached for =
comment.=20
"Now, if Edwards had said that Kerry had shrapnel lodged between his =
ears, I might think he was on to something." --Houston, Texas=20
"Kerry gave a big speech last week about how his faith is so 'important' =
to him. He announced that his favorite Bible verse is John 16:3. Of =
course, the speech writer meant John 3:16, but nobody in the Kerry camp =
was familiar enough with Scripture to catch the error. Fittingly, John =
16:3 says, "And these things they will do to you because they have not =
known the Father nor Me." The Lord works in mysterious ways!" =
--Albuquerque, New Mexico=20
CORRECTION: In edition No. 04-33, The Patriot noted, "Madison himself =
wrote in Federalist No. 48, 'The advantage of being armed, which the =
Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation...forms a =
barrier against the enterprises of ambition, more insurmountable than =
any....' That is no less true today than it was in 1787." Madison's =
quote is from Federalist No. 46.=20

THE LAST WORD
"So, let me ask you a few questions: Are you an independent? Do you =
reject 'partisan labels'? Do you like to weigh each candidate on the =
merits rather than simply vote the party line? Do you wait until the =
last weeks of the presidential election before you make up your mind on =
whom to vote for, so you can study the issues as much as possible? Do =
you watch the presidential debates and feel disappointed that you didn't =
get enough 'substance' on 'the issues'? Well, bully for you. You might =
deserve a lollypop, but you don't deserve to run the country. =
Unfortunately, you (and people like you) do. ... But as a matter of =
gross generalization, no segment of voters is less deserving of the high =
esteem they get from the media and politicians than independents, =
centrists, moderates, swing voters, undecideds, and others we generally =
call middle-of-the-roaders. ... If you wait until the last minute to =
figure out whom to vote for; if you can't tell the differences between =
the parties and their candidates (and you're not politically exotic -- =
i.e., an anarchist or a libertarian); if you think voting is like a =
Chinese menu where you can pick a little from here and a little from =
there; then the odds are you don't know very much about the political =
system. You may be a brilliant neurosurgeon, but I know interns who are =
sharper than you about politics." --Jonah Goldberg=20
