After gay-sex allegation derailed his re-election plans, he'll now
work as a committee aide

WASHINGTON -
Rep. Edward L. Schrock, R-2nd, is not leaving Capitol Hill after all,
following his unexpected decision in August not to seek re-election to
a third two-year term.
Schrock, a conservative lawmaker and retired Navy captain from Hampton
Roads, will return to work for Congress as a staff member - in a
reversal of a much more common pattern.
A spokesman for Rep. Thomas M. Davis III, R-11th, said Schrock will
become a subcommittee staff director on Davis' House Government Reform
Committee, beginning in the Congress that starts in January.
Davis and Schrock discussed the possibility of Schrock's joining the
committee staff, and Schrock "has agreed to take on that challenge,"
said David Marin, the Davis committee spokesman.
"He's been a great contributor to our committee as a member, and he'll
be a great contributor as a member of the staff," Marin said.
Schrock, 63, withdrew from his re-election bid amid allegations on a
homosexual activist's Web site that Schrock had sought gay sex through
a telephone dating service.
Schrock did not confirm or deny them but said the personal allegations
that had been leveled would "not allow my campaign to focus on the
real issues facing our nation and region."
Schrock declined repeated requests for interviews in the following
weeks.

Schrock Ignores Past Sexual Liaisons With Men, Casts Vote for Federal
Marriage Amendment
In a stunning rebuke to the men he has had sexual relationships with,
known adulterer, Rep. Edward L. Schrock has voted to amend the US
Constitution in an effort to restrict rights for gay and lesbian
Americans.

Congressman Edward L. Schrock, a known ADULTERER and the only
Congressman known to have committed felonious activity in the
Commonwealth of Virginia has caved to pressure from the radical right
in casting a vote to amend the US Constitution to prohibit lesbian and
gay marriage and to invalidate state's attempts to add civil unions
for same gender couples.
It's quite surprising to me that a man who had such little disregard
for his own wife would show his hypocrisy to the entire nation in the
waning days of his lame duck post in Congress...But you know, with the
way my incoming mail looks...Hypocrisy seems to be the order of the
day for many of these so called "Representatives."
Because Congressman Schrock's office has continued to stonewall
(hmmm...Interesting word there) on the accuracy of the initial audio
posts, blogACTIVE.com is now providing a complete set of 7 audio
recordings of the Congressman trolling for sex with men in the
Commonwealth of Virginia.
In a brazen slap at the institution of marriage, Schrock goes so far
on the recordings to inform those he is seeking sex with that he is,
in fact, married. I guess these tapes leave only one question
unanswered: If the US Constitution had an amendment as supported by
Schrock in the House vote today, would he have been any less likely to
ignore his marriage vows and ignore his Baptist Church's teachings in
his quest for quick, no-strings sex? I think not. Perhaps during his
few short weeks in Congress, Schrock should consider introducing an
amendment to prohibit adultery.

TAKE ACTION: The Original GURLEY MAN Exposed in High Power job at RNC!
Lately, I never know what will happen when I call one of these gays
responsible for gay bashing. But much to my surprise, Daniel Gurley,
the NUMBER TWO POLITICAL OPERATIVE at the REPUBLICAN NATIONAL
COMMITTEE completely confirmed for me on the phone that yes, he's gay.
Now, I know some readers have a tough time connecting the guy who
manages all the money to the political hate...but could it be any
clearer in this case? This man is paid, blogACTIVE readers, to
supervise campaigns in the field and what a field day against gays he
has been having! Unreal! You can read all about the phone call to
Gurley in a well written article by John Byrne at Blue Lemur.
Amazingly, Gurley -- a REAL Gurley man -- joined the RNC in the dual
roles of Deputy Political Director and National Field Director. Here's
what the entry said at Dan's fraternity Alumni notes section:
Dan Gurley ’94 is the national field director for the Republican
National Committee for the 2004 election cycle. He filled the number
two political position at the RNC, assisting the re-election efforts
of the Bush-Cheney ticket, along with targeted United States Senate,
United States House and Governor races across the country.
Lucky for Dan, the undergraduates of his fraternity approved a clause
protecting members based on their sexual orientation. Too bad his
current employer has no such policy!
TAKE ACTION:
If you're as amazingly shocked as I am, take a moment, Click here and
write to DAN GURLEY, JAY BANNING and others at the RNC and tell them
how you feel about gay bashing. Ask Dan Gurley how he can sleep at
night knowing that he is one of the people responsible for the
anti-gay attacks being thrown by his party!!. A copy of your letter
will be sent to a bunch of folks at the RNC who should be educated
about their hateful campaigns.

do a story.
I don’t think there is any good argument for outing a closeted
politician who supports gay rights. But any secretly gay person who
uses his bully pulpit to vilify his own people deserves the treatment
gay blogger Michael Rogers is now meting out in the nation’s capital.
No one is forcing these staffers to take these jobs. If gay people
working for antigay legislators aren’t losing any sleep over these
career choices, what’s wrong with the rest of us exposing their
hypocrisy to the world?

HISTORIC MOMENT: Outing campaign levels the field... First all GLBT
Race in American History!
The state of California is once again making history in the struggle
for gay and lesbian equality. The U.S. House race in the state's 26th
district is the first time in American history that both major
political parties are fielding out gay or lesbian candidates. Cynthia
Matthews (D) has been out and in a loving relationship with her
partner of eleven years, while incumbent David Dreier (R) was recently
outed in the LA Weekly and will be the subject of a Hustler Magazine
article due out this fall.
As usual, RAW STORY is on top of the latest developments with a link
to John Byrne's BLUE LEMUR. This story is of particular interest to
people who live in Washington, DC. While Dreier was voting against gay
and lesbian residents in the nation's capital, Cynthia Matthews was
living an honest and open life in her congressional district. Here's a
bit from the story:
In a surprising twist to an already unusual California congressional
race, the Democratic challenger to incumbent Republican Congressman
David Dreier has told RAW STORY that she is a lesbian, and has made a
series of conditional statements rebuking Dreier’s position on gay
issues while concurrently questioning the payment arrangements with
his chief of staff Brad Smith.
Her statement makes this the first known time in history an openly gay
candidate has run against another candidate also believed to be gay.
The L.A. Times, presented with this information, has said they are not
planning a story.
Democrat Cynthia Matthews, who has not kept her sexuality secret from
the press, said Saturday that she was proud of her relationship with
her same-sex partner.
“I have been in an eleven year relationship with my partner,” Matthews
said, “and refuse to run for office if I would be required to relegate
my partner to the closet.”

ACTION: Tell the RNC Leadership that gay bashing must stop. Tell Gay
CFO/Dir of Admin JAY BANNING to STOP THE BASHING!
It's just unbelievable to me that a gay man, Jay Banning, can serve as
the CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER and DIRECTOR OF ADMINISTRATION of the
Republican National Committee at the same time that the RNC prints and
distributes blatantly homophobic materials in swing states. For the

Do these men and women in power have ANY SENSE OF DECENCY WHATSOEVER?
In today's New York Times, RNC Spokesperson Christine Iverson
acknowledges that this ugly hate speech IS the work of the RNC.
Unreal. Someone needs to wake up Ed Gillespie and remind him we are in
the twenty first Century.
PLEASE TAKE ACTION:

Republican National Committee and tell them considering that the man
who they trust with nearly $300 MILLION, they ought to be more
respectful of our lives! Remind them that Jay Banning -- and other gay
staffers at the RNC -- should be entitled to equal rights under the
law. Tell the RNC that the HATEFUL flyers (see previous entry below)
will not be tolerated by the American people.

DEVELOPING STORY: GOP Refuses to Comment on Homophobic Flyers, MAJOR
GOP Staffer to be outed later today!
This is absolutely the most -homophobic bunch of pigs I have ever seen
in politics. They have no problem using the talents of gay men and
lesbians at the GOP, and more information will be going up about that
later today.
In the meantime, get a look at the hateful, fearmongering that Ed
Gillespie refuses to stop. See the Brochure that the RNC REFUSES to
even comment on.
Where are gay men like Ed Schrock and David Dreier when the RNC puts
out garbage like this?

TAKE ACTION: Rep. David Dreier is Outed...Latest Roy Cohn Award Winner
refuses to answer developing questions. Papers involved in "cover-up"
Poor David Dreier. He spent sooooo many years hiding his gay life from
the radical right and just a few years after he attains the
Chairmanship of the powerful House Rules Committee -- the youngest
person ever to do so, and perhaps the first gay man -- is now: BUSTED!
If you live in Washington, you've probably have already read Kitty
Kelley's new book on the Bush clan,The Family. It shows that the
President's mommy was not as sharp as some might have thought. On page
491 Barbara Bush laments that her daughter's "relationship" with David
Dreier is not going anywhere. Ms. Kelley, who is always proven right
in the end, quotes Bar as saying that Dreier "Never laid a hand on
her." Hmmmm... David "dated" Bo Derek too and that seemed to fizzle
out. The real question on the minds of insiders in Washington is how
did Dreier's Chief of Staff, Brad Smith, feel about all of this?
There's no need to recount Dreier's homophobic record, you can scroll
down to see the votes in the post from Tuesday. This guy is, as my mom
used to say, "really something else, a real piece of work" I don't
know what he is, but how this man shares beds with men and then votes
like this against gay and lesbian Americans is just, hmmmm,
SCHROCKING!

Dr. Janice Nelson, a medical school professor in Los Angeles, has come
forward on the record to Raw Story with knowledge of Dreier's secret
relationship with his Chief of Staff Brad Smith. Dr. Nelson, who had
kept secret information about the Congressman's relationship even as
she ran against him in 2000, has decided to come forward because she
too had experienced media silence during her own campaign.
"America is fed up with media that care little with reporting the
truth and more about reader manipulation," I told the publisher of one
of these papers. Now you can tell these publishers and editors how YOU

UPDATE: Dreier was the focus of a story by Doug Ireland in this week's
edition of LA Weekly. Over at his blog, Direland, Doug confirms for
readers that he has confirmed Dreier's sexuality with another US
Congressman and leaves absolutely no doubt as to Dreier being gay:
I have not the slightest doubt that the outing campaign initiated by
Mike Rogers' blogactive.com and supported by Raw Story's reporting is
accurate in exposing Dreier. I first heard that Dreier was gay back
when he first came to Congress over two decades ago and I was
Washington correspondent for New York Magazine--in those days, Dreier
was much more active on the gay social scene than he was later as he
mounted the Republican food chain. Moreover, in the course of
reporting this story, I talked to a gay Member of Congress who has
observed Dreier in gay behavior and is 100% "sure," as this member
told me, that Dreier is gay. And, clearly, Dreier's demagogic
political homophobia justifies reporting the outing campaign targeting
him.

Liberal Media? Hmmm, is THAT who protected Dreier?? Let's see...
The mainstream press continues to deny that they had any hand in
helping keep Dreier's secret from the public. Hmmmm... While the
independent press, Low Magazine, wrote the piece on Dreier in 1997!
Yet no local daily has covered the fact that Dreier is a homophobe and
gay. Could it be that the paper did not know? Could there be a
cover-up? Were reporters told what they could, and could not, ask Rep.
Dreier?

Now how is this for some interesting connections: The papers in
Dreier's area are all owned by the same company that owns the Denver
Post...run by Dean Singleton. Of all of the papers in Congressman
Dreier's district owned by Singleton's company, not ONE of them
thought it important enough to report on the contradictions of the

Oh, wait, there's more. You see, the Denver Post's publisher decided
to give $500 to Sen. Wayne Allard's campaign and then listed "Denver
Post" as employer. Well, Mr. Singleton, can you get any more unethical

the author of the Senate version of the horribly homophobic Federal
Marriage Amendment.

UPDATED at 6:19pm EST -- Hustler Letter to Dreier ! The heat is on
Rules Committee Chair!
blogACTIVE.com has obtained copies of the letters written by Hustler
Magazine Features Editor Mark Cromer to Representative David Dreier
and Editor Phil Drake of the San Valley Gabriel Tribune.
In the letter to Dreier, Hustler asks for an interview with the
Republican Congressman who has one of the nation's most homophobic

While some are holding Dreier's opposition to the Federal Marriage
Amendment as an example of one pro pro-gay action, his 12-term record
shows that Dreier is quite anti-gay:
Voted FOR the Defense of Marriage Act (1996)
Voted FOR the Marriage Protection Act (2004)
Opposed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, ENDA (1996, 1997, 1999)
Opposed the Hate Crimes Prevention Act (1997)
Supported allowing federally funded charities to discriminate against
gays and lesbians, despite local laws. (2001)
Voted to prohibit lesbians and gays in DC from adpting children -
3,000 miles from his distirct! (1998)
Opposed the Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS (HOPWA)
program. (1996)
Opposed increases in State AIDS Drug Assistance Program (1997)
Opposed the restoration of funding to HOPWA (1998)

While I was able to check the votes, I decided the only proper way to
check if Congressman Dreier's office has a non-discrimination office
with regard to gay and lesbian employees. I will be faxing the
Congressman's office today to see if they object to my putting the
audio files of those calls on the web for blogACTIVE.com readers.
The independent press has covered David Dreier for many years. Low

It's totally legal to call the Congressman's office and ask "Does
Congressman Dreier have a policy of non descrimination in his office

As we learned from Schrock, once the best they can come up with is a
hang up, they know that they can't craft a message worth repeating.
These right wingers who have taken over our country MUST MUST MUST be
exposed. Keep the pressure on Dreier...and more are on the way.
Remember, BE POLITE. The people who answer the phones are scared of
the fact that this will probably throw the congressman's chance of
being elected into an unknown...interesting place for the Chairman of
the Rules Committee who did not even bother to put up a campaign
website!

As for those who doubt what is happeneing....let me be perfectly
clear... David Dreier is a rabidly anti-gay legislator...he has the
chance to tell the American people he is gay himself or it appears
that a slew of press and sites will do it for him. This is America and
I will NOT let anyone, Not Steve Schmidt who tried to kill my story
off the record on behalf of the Bush Cheney Campaign and not that Ben
Ginsburg (now disgraced lawyer) guy who tried on behalf of Bush Cheney
04 to intimidate me against outing a campaign official.

BREAKING NEWS: Boifromtroy declares Dreier's sexuality open secret in
Cali district!
What a week! I want to get this up as soon as soon as possible... And
congratulations to the Boifromtroy for outing David Dreier. As you
know from the previous entries here, I have a lot of questions about
Dreier -- espeically about his DC living arrangements...and the fact
that he refused to even say he was a straight man when asked on radio.
The Boi From Troy declares the Congressman's sexual orientation an
"open secret" around Dreier's California Congressional District...And
who better to break the news than the web's number one gay
conservative blogger. Congrats Troy! We are glad to see you've come to
see the value in calling out gay legislators, especially the kind with
a 92% approval of the Christian Coalition!
I don't know what evidence Boifromtroy has, and some of the bits of
his article are wrong...I never pitched the Dreier story to national
-- or local -- media. But look for my update and notes soon.

ACTION: Tell Rep. David Dreier to speak OUT! -- Hustler magazine to
run expose!
File this in the "Strange Bedfellows" folder....
Well, Hustler magazine is trying to get Rep. David Dreier to speak
out. Here's a link to an article by John Byrne and a letter that
Hustler Features Editor Mark Cromer wrote to the Congressman
yesterday.
ACTION ITEM:
Click here to ask Brad Smith of Congressman Dreier's office to stand
up and speak out about the privacy we so strongly desire in the gay
community. Gay and lesbian citizens want to hear David Dreier's
justification for voting the Defense of Marriage Act and the Marriage
Protection Act.
Also, be sure to thank the Congressman through your note to Brad for
volunteering to send his own kids to Iraq on the Bill Maher Show a few
weeks ago...only problem is this, David Dreier has no kids to send
anywhere, let alone into the middle of Iraq. Come to think of it, why
is David Dreier voting for all these initiatives to protect marriage
when he doesn't even have a marriage to protect? Strange bedfellows
indeed!

Congressman David Dreier votes for "all Americans"?!
First off, no new outing today. Many of you have asked "Who's next?"
Well, it's not that simple. Every "i" must be dotted and every "t'"
must be crossed before the site can go public with new ACTION items.
As for the campaign, we're getting ready to make more frequent posts
and expose those in the government who work to hurt the gay community.
John Aravosis, publisher of AmericaBlog.org put it best when he told
the Los Angeles Times "They declared war, we're not going to respond
with a hug."
For those of you who might not follow California politics, Congressman
David Dreier has long been rumored to be gay. As I said earlier, no
outing in this post, just reporting the facts. I have tried to call
Congressman Dreier's Press Secretary, Jo Maney, on multiple occasions
and she has refused to take or respond to my calls. The rest of
Congressman Dreir's staff have simply hung up on me without
explanation. I was especially interested in talking with Brad Smith
about his living arrangements with the Congressman here in DC ...Alas,
no call back from Brad either.
If you had a chance to listen to The Sirius Satellite Network's OutQ
Radio coverage during the Democratic or Republican Conventions you
know that the team of Michelangelo Signorile, Corey Johnson and John
McMullen offered up some of the most comprehensive convention coverage
anywhere. I was glued to my web connection when Michelangelo announced
that CONGRESSMAN DREIER would be on his show. As I was listening to
the interview I was really hoping Michelangelo would ask the
Congressman the question on so many minds. As usual, Michelangelo did
not leave me disappointed.

Now, since I don't discriminate in my friendships, I happen to know a
lot of straight people. Some of my closest friends are straight. I
must say, Congressman Dreier's refusal to say he is heterosexual is
the first time I can recall a man not acknowledging his own
straightness when asked.
In the clip, Dreier assures OutQ listeners that he is "voting for all
the American people." The voting scores of the Human Rights Campaign
don't paint such a nice picture of his record. The Christian
Coalition, on the other hand, gave Dreier a 92% rating in its last
voter guide.

ACTION: Tell Schrock's Chief of Staff Tom Gordy: The time for an
apology is now!
First the big news: a MONTH ago, John Byrne at Raw Story, the Liberal
alternative news site to closet case and homophobe Matt Drudge,
uncovered the Bush AWOL from the Guard story. My Boston sources tell
me that the Boston Globe was handed this story by Raw Story a month
ago and today's front page story is just as Raw Story presented it
more than 30 days ago! Chalk up another one for the bloggers, folks!!
Now on to Schrock follow-up.
I had thought the Schrock matter was over, then I read an editorial in
this last week's Washington Post. I wondered if the Post had bothered
to listen to the audio on the site or why they didn't conduct testing
on the files if they were not sure of their authenticity. After
talking with others in the media, I was tipped off: "Well,
Mike...there are folks close to Schrock who say the tapes are fakes."
"Whoa!" I thought. "No Way!"
Wow. No proof? Once the audio file of Rep. Schrock (R-VA) went up, the
right wing moved into "Immediate Discredit Mode" - The comments were
amazing...I was practically accused of manufacturing the tapes myself.
You can listen to this additional audio and make up your own mind:
1. In the first of these two tapes, Congressman Schrock speaks about
the need to be discrete and he "can't emphasize that enough!" I bet!
Since some of these recordings were made when Schrock was a candidate
and some when he was a member of the House of Representatives, you
would think he would not have been so INdiscrete! - These recordings
were made in 2000 and 2001.
2. In this recording, the Congressman assures listeners that he "works
out religiously." Is this what is going on at the Atlantic Shores
Baptist Church, in which Schrock touts his membership in on his
website? Hmmmm.

TAKE ACTION
Since some close to Rep. Schrock are still having some problem with
the telling the truth, I am hoping blogACTIVE.com readers can take a
moment to click here and write his Chief of Staff, Tom Gordy. Express
that gays and lesbians are owed an apology from Ed Schrock. If his 24
year Naval career does not discredit his comments about gays and
lesbians in the military, what does?
