Object: OxyContin addiction affects the brain's chemical make-up
http://www.oxycontin-addiction.us/
People with OxyContin addiction acquire the drugs in a variety of
ways, including forging fraudulent prescriptions, visiting several
different doctors for prescriptions or buying the drugs illegally on
the street.
Because most health insurance companies will cover the costs of
OxyContin, abusers can purchase the drugs at pharmacy prices, and then
sell the OxyContin for wildly inflated street prices.
Unfortunately, many of those suffering from OxyContin addiction have
health insurance that will no longer pay for prescriptions.
Because these addicts cannot afford the high street-level prices, they
often switch to heroin;
OxyContin and heroin have similar effects, so both drugs are
attractive to the same abuser population.
In fact, OxyContin is sometimes referred to as "poor man's heroin."
Like other substance abuse problems, OxyContin addiction cannot be
treated effectively at home, but requires close supervision by a
trained medical professional.
Because OxyContin addiction affects the brain's chemical make-up, drug
abusers who attempt to detox at home will experience severe withdrawal
symptoms.
In a medical environment, these symptoms can be eased and the addict
undergoing detox made more comfortable.

Ding, ding, ding. We have a winner!
Johnny, what does Rush win?
Rush wins a long prison term in a Florida state prison. What? Rush is a
Republican? In that case, he wins rehab and gets to continue spewing his
racist hate on the radio.

Those are the usual distortions, half-truths, and outright lies so prevalent
about OxyContin and opiates in general. Notice that they are from a Web
site advertising a "recovery" center, which includes no primary scientific
references but does include the self-serving remark:
"If OxyContin addiction might be a problem for you or someone you love, we
encourage you to give Gulf Coast Recovery a call today to learn more about
our treatment options."
The fact is that opiate addiction is indeed a problem, but opiates have no
harmful long-term effects on the brain or body. Their worst side effect is
probably constipation. What are commonly reported as harmful effects are
usually correlations or the effects of contaminants in street drugs.
See the Consumer Reports review of opiates and other drugs (which *does*
give primary references):
_Licit and Illicit Drugs_. EM Brecher and the Editors of Consumer Reports.

Please show me the data on the effects of the use of multiple drugs in
the large doses (around 100 pills a day)that Rush is reported to have
taken over his self admitted 7 years of pill popping painkillers that
leads you to your conclusion?
BTW just to give you some idea of the MASSIVE scale of His Drug Habit
on these painkillers, assume a slow buildup over the seven year period
(to the reported 100 pill per day level it is said he had reached) and
you will see that in that period of time he could well have consumed
over 145,000 pills in a little over 2,500 days.

He's not talking about Rush in specific, but what people call the
harmful effects of opiates.
He's saying it's not the opiate, but what else is in the "stepped on"
end product.

Just so I am clear, you are saying that OxyContin does not alter the brain
chemistry while the person is using it?
