Thailand's PM may stand aside

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) -- Thailand's Prime Minister Thaksin
Shinawatra said Wednesday he would consider stepping down
temporarily, but continued his political maneuvering against opponents
who demand he step down for alleged corruption and abuse of power.
A leader of the anti-Thaksin movement, publisher Sondhi Limthongkul, said
Prem's statement was a hint that Thaksin should step down because he was
the one causing "divisiveness" in the country.

But the simmering discontent came to the boil in
January when he announced the sale of
Shin Corporation to the investment arm of the
Singaporean Government for 77.3 billion bhat
(£1.14 billion). Not only was a strategic industry
being sold to a foreign power, it also emerged that
Mr Thaksin’s family had managed to avoid paying
any tax on the sale.
