Poll reveals little support for Bush plan
Reuters News Service
WASHINGTON -
A majority of Americans want to see few changes to Social Security,
and most oppose private accounts, according to a poll from the group
AARP.
The poll, to be released next week, found two-thirds of Americans aged
30 and older wanted the system to emerge largely intact from any
effort to extend its solvency, AARP policy director John Rother said
last week at a forum on proposals to overhaul the federal retirement
benefit program.
While nearly half of those polled favored the idea of individual
investment accounts, that support plummets once they better understood
the details about fees and risks, Rother said.
