Posted Speed Limits are just GUIDELINES |
You don't have to drive 60 just because the sign says so. Do 40 or
50 and encourage others to do the same. Lets make the highways safer
for everyone. Thank you.
PS - Speeders are spongedicks.

That's true! I don't go 60 when the sign says to,
I usually go 75 or so. Glad you agree that
the speed limit is only to be used as a loose
guideline.

You are correct sir. Speed limits are limits not required driving speeds. As
a matter of fact you could be driving 50mph in a 60mph zone during rainy
conditions, snow and other hazardous conditions and be stopped for unsafe
driving.
PS
You want to avoid other drivers. I discovered years ago that if you drive
the speed limit you'll have the road all to yourself. You'll be passed as if
you are standing still and there won't be anyone behind you or in front of
you.

And so it panned out that the following script was sculpted by
none other than born free:
You are correct sir. Speed limits are limits not required driving speeds.
In many, many situations they're actually tantamount to moral
minima.
As a matter of fact you could be driving 50mph in a 60mph zone during rainy
conditions, snow and other hazardous conditions and be stopped for unsafe
driving.
Of course, though I'd say that such a speed would probably be ok
in the wet (perhaps not a rainstorm); my car was gripping the road
just fine when being driven at double the posted speed in slush by
"Muggins" last winter. ;}
You want to avoid other drivers.
Completely agree, and this is a case for driving FASTER,
conditions permitting, not slower. This is the major thorn in the
gut of cruising at a nice, steady, comfortable 70-80 mph: not just
the issue of always coming up on someone travelling 1mph slower
and having to gas up to pass them, but the fact that there'll
likely be one ashwipe who wants to "pace" you behind, perhaps even
in the left lane (!), thinking that sitting 20m behind your bumper
in an adjacent lane is the way to be a RaDAR shield. When driving
at 100+mph, these issues all disappear.
Therefore, yes, the speed limit is only a guideline, especially
since it's set wrong to raise revenue. And yes, avoiding other
drivers is a good thing, and this is best done at 100+mph on the
suburban/rural highway. Therefore you should drive at 100+mph
whenever and wherever possible. ;}

Keep right except to pass; never pass on the right.

Sure, that will work for a while, but eventually some Soccermom Utility Vehicle
whose driver is busy yakking on her cellular phone will rear-end you because
you're moving slower than she expects.

Isn't it true that large speed differentials are dangerous? So you going
40 when everyone else is going 70 means you are the danger.

Not automatically so, but with people like Judy on the roads, then
yeah.

Especially when the slowpoke is an unskilled numbskull!

They are dangerous and especially so when Americans refuse to follow the
'only pass on the left, slower traffic keep to the right' rules.

A lot of Americans seem blissfully unaware of the importance that *both*
of those rules be followed. People who pass on the right (for whatever
reason) make it much more difficult for the driver being passed to keep
track of the possibilities. That is, I think, the genesis of many of the
situations you see where two drivers change into the same empty lane
between each other.

Why do you think that 40 mph should be the top speed? Or will you demand
we all slow down to 30 or then 20? You remind me of those people back
when horseless carriages were first invented and they couldn't imagine
going at above 25 mph without going into a time and space warp. "People
will die from just going that fast!", they screamed. You're a lot like
that.

I'm getting about 10 to 15 or so myself.
