E-mails surrendered by Time magazine in a federal probe show one of
the sources for a story that outed a covert CIA agent was President
Bush's political guru Karl Rove, according to a published report.
The revelation in this week's Newsweek could trigger a major political
embarrassment for Rove and the White House, which had steadfastly
denied involvement in the July 2003 leak that triggered a partisan
firestorm.
Many Bush aides believe the grand jury probe has become less about the
leak and more about potential lies under oath, said a source familiar
with the investigation.
"I long ago concluded this is not a leak probe ... it's about
perjury," the source said.
Top Bush aides do not believe Rove broke the law, but they could be
left red-faced because White House spokesman Scott McClellan had
repeatedly said Rove had told him he was not involved with the leak.
