GOP Texan looks to Democrats for help on vets bill
By SUZANNE GAMBOA Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON —
Spurned by his fellow Republicans, Rep. Sam Johnson has found a
high-level Democratic ally in his quest to get congressional
recognition for a Korean War veterans group.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., is helping Johnson, a
veteran of the Korea and Vietnam wars, after years of being
stonewalled while his own party was in charge.
"I've been trying to do this for six years and we kept getting stopped
by our own guys. It's unbelievable now with the Democrats in charge
they are going to help with this," said Johnson, a Plano Republican,
who declined to elaborate on the GOP opposition.
Hoyer and Johnson plan to introduce a bill that would grant a national
charter to the Korean War Veterans Association, making the group the
only organization specifically for Korean War veterans that is
nationally recognized.
A federal charter doesn't provide any money, but gives it an official
recognition that allows its members to represent veterans with
disability benefit claims before Veterans Affairs boards.
