July 27, 2005--Hillary Clinton has allied herself with the
moderate Democratic Leadership Council and rumors abound that she will vote
to confirm John Roberts for the Supreme Court. But, her image is so firmly
entrenched that there is little movement in the latest edition of the
Hillary Meter (review trends).
Ideologically, there is little change in perceptions of New York's
junior Senator compared to recent surveys. Forty-three percent (43%) believe
that she is politically liberal. That's down from 45% two weeks ago and 51%
in January.
Demographic details are available for Premium Members.
Thirty-six percent (36%) of Americans view the former First Lady as a
moderate while 7% believe she is politically conservative.
Collectively, today's Hillary Meter places Senator Clinton a net 53
points to the left of the nation's political center. Two weeks ago, she was
50 points to the left of center. A month ago, she was 54 points to the left.
[Explanation of the political center and more data below]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The political center is calculated by subtracting the number of
liberals from the number of conservatives among the general public (35%
conservative, 18% liberal for a net +17). For the Senator, 7% conservative
minus 43% liberal equals a net minus 36. The minus 36 reading for Senator
Clinton is 53 points away from the plus 17 reading for the general public.
The latest edition of the Hillary Meter finds that 37% of Americans
will definitely vote against Hillary Clinton if she runs for President in
2008. That's up from 35% two weeks ago and down from 39% a month ago.
Twenty-nine percent (29%) say they would definitely vote for the
former First Lady. That's down slightly from 30% two weeks ago. (review
trends for all Hillary Meter questions).
Nationally, 42% of Americans have a favorable opinion of Hillary while
41% hold an unfavorable view. Two weeks ago, those numbers were 44%
favorable and 41% unfavorable.
The Hillary Meter is a twice monthly measure of Senator Hillary
Clinton's effort to move to the political center. The next update is
scheduled for Wednesday, August 10. For as long as the former First Lady is
a viable candidate for the White House, Rasmussen Reports will monitor
public perceptions of her political ideology.
