CBS Producer on Thin Ice After Guard Story
NEW YORK -- The fallout from CBS using forged documents to support a
story critical of President Bush's National Guard service most
endangers a woman few viewers know.
Mary Mapes, a veteran producer at CBS News, reported most of the
National Guard story, including obtaining the documents CBS now admits
it can't authenticate. She also passed on the phone number of her
source, former Texas Army National Guard officer Bill Burkett, to the
Kerry campaign.
Mapes, 48, was described by colleagues on Tuesday as a talented
journalist who made no secret of her liberal political beliefs.
Mapes worked at Seattle's KIRO-TV before coming to CBS in 1989. John
Carlson, a former commentator at KIRO-TV who is host of a conservative
radio talk show in Seattle, remembers Mapes as a talented producer
with whom he often argued politics in the newsroom. Mapes was "quite
liberal" and disliked the current President Bush's father, he said.
Dan Rather acknowledged Monday that Burkett didn't come to CBS. The
network approached him about the documents, knowing he had been trying
for several years to discredit President Bush's military service
record, he said.
In a USA Today story, Burkett said he agreed to turn documents
critical of President Bush, now widely considered to be fake, over to
CBS on the condition CBS would help arrange a conversation with the
Kerry campaign.
CBS acknowledged Mapes passed on Burkett's phone number to top Kerry
adviser Joe Lockhart, and Lockhart called him.

didn't need and he was incapable of managing ought to be fired.
Rather got one aspect of a story wrong, he's said he was story, the rest of
the story is accurate.

It is very clear they worked the VVAW and WinterSoldier together
so with or without a picture they were connected.

You provided a positive claim that Fox doctored a
photo -- to which photo were you referring?
You seem to know of some photo that you claim was
faked so it is up to you to provide the reference IF
you think it faked.

Although, I would still like to know the truth of the
photo (or photos), it is clear that Kerry and Fonda
worked together on the VVAW and the WinterSoldier
fraud.
