A New Low Point in this President's Dismal Record
David Muhly
is the Sierra Club's regional representative for the Appalachian
region
On Wednesday, President Bush signed the ill-named "Healthy Forests
Restoration Act," authorizing sweeping changes in the management of
our National Forests. The House had rubber-stamped legislation
supported by industry and the administration, and the Senate later
passed a "compromise" version of the same bill. In the wake of the
California fires, 90 percent of which burned in chaparral and
shrubland, supporters of the legislation cynically wasted no time in
moving their project forward.
The bill is aptly named, it was not rubber-stamped (it was discussed and
debated at length), and it represents a clear Bush victory over the
Environmental Wackos, who had prevented the clearing of dead underbrush,
which fueled the costly and dangerous California fires.
Muhly is a crackpot.

Lie.
The California fires were mainly -- almost entirely -- in the chapparal, not
in the forests. Chapparal is a low-growing, oily shrub that spreads for
hundreds of square miles. It has nothing to do with forests and logging.
No one logs chapparal because it cannot be logged.
The Bush "healthy forest initiative" is nothing but permission for the
remaining national forests to be destroyed for no reason.

Nope, the truth.
The California fires were mainly -- almost entirely -- in the chapparal,
not
in the forests. Chapparal is a low-growing, oily shrub that spreads for

Nonsense. There are scores of fires in the forests, and the dead underbrush
DOES contribute to that fire hazard. So you are just plain WRONG.
No one logs chapparal because it cannot be logged.
It was you who attempted to swerve the discussion away from forest dead
brush and into a discussion of only chapparal. And if you think no forests
burned recently in the huge California fires, you are simply nuts.
The Bush "healthy forest initiative" is nothing but permission for the
remaining national forests to be destroyed for no reason.
More Environmental Freak hysterical nonsense. Logging trees from forests
does NOT "destroy the forest". If that were so, the lumber companies would
go quickly out of business. You're talking total ***** now.
How very typical of the Intellectually Vacant Democrat, however.

So exactly how will this underbrush be removed? Who pays for this removal
and how do they pay for it. Details man give us details on this bill you
think is so great.
No one logs chapparal because it cannot be logged.
It was you who attempted to swerve the discussion away from forest dead
brush and into a discussion of only chapparal. And if you think no forests
burned recently in the huge California fires, you are simply nuts.
And yet, you have no actual answer to how does the bill deal with the
Chapparal issue which did indeed account for the vast mnajority of the
burned areas in CA recently.
The Bush "healthy forest initiative" is nothing but permission for the
remaining national forests to be destroyed for no reason.

In fact in the South East, the National Forests were originally hardwoods,
Oak, Hickory, Locust etc. These trees have been taken and replaced with
Loblolly pines. You ask about forest desturction, that is it in a nutshell.
Oak that took 100+ years to grow replaced by 20 year pulp wood.
How very typical of the Intellectually Vacant Democrat, however.
You are good at name calling, but so far real short on any facts, please
feel free to postr some. Or are you the typical republican shor ton facts
long on juvanile name calling?
