Prime Minister and Mrs Howard, Premier and Mrs Bracks, Ambassador Levy and
Mrs Levy, our generous patrons and honoured guests,
On behalf of the United Israel Appeal of Australia and the Australia/Israel
Jewish Affairs Council I am delighted to welcome you all here this evening.
Your first State Visit to Israel, Prime Minister, is the latest chapter in
the strong and dynamic relationship between Israel and Australia, going back
more than half a century.
It further enhanced your profound, supportive and ongoing close connection
with Australia's Jewish community - a relationship spanning several decades.
Moreover, Prime Minister, your latest Israel experience, following earlier
visits in 1964 and 1988, is important to us as proud Australian Jews. After
all, Israel is the birthplace of the Jewish people, where, millennia ago,
our spiritual, religious and political identity was shaped.
Australia has been unflinching in its commitment to Israel through
successive governments, Coalition and Labor, during horrendous acts of
terrorism and regional conflict, during the worst excesses of the United
Nations when Zionism was equated with racism, and when economic boycotts
threatened to literally drive Israel out of business. <snip>

Abu Dahdah is an alleged 'senior Al Qaeda operative' held in Spain
with known contacts in Australia.
In the Herald Sun of 1/8/2002, Daryl Williams, the Attorney-General,
confirmed ASIO was aware of Abu Dahdah's connections to Australia.
The Australian Prime Minister, John Howard, who yesterday claimed to
have known 'for some time' about Abu Dahdah, today admitted that
a formal request to interview the Spanish suspect had only been lodged
three days ago!
John Howard: "The Government agencies have known about these
contacts for some time and as indicated by the Federal Police,
the two people concerned are described as people of interest to
our authorities, and on top of that, the police have sought the
permission already of the Spanish authorities to interview the man in
Spain.
ABC: When did they do that?
JOHN HOWARD: Well they did that a little while ago.
I'm not going to say exactly when. "
One day after the ABC told the AFP they were running the story,
ONE YEAR after the Attorney General avoided the same questions as the
PM tried to avoid regarding ACTION TAKEN, the AFP asked to
interrogate Abu Dahdah.
We are sitting ducks with these morons.
Our P.M., R. Slicker, has been too busy as Bush's lap dog, creating
anarchy, death and new enemies in TexIraq, to worry about the
