Mr. Cheney said yesterday that the "evidence is overwhelming" of an
Iraq-Qaeda axis and that there had been a "whole series of high-level
contacts" between them. The 9/11 panel said a senior Iraqi
intelligence officer made three visits to Sudan in the early 1990's,
meeting with Osama bin Laden once in 1994. It said Osama bin Laden had
asked for "space to establish training camps, as well as assistance in
procuring weapons, but Iraq apparently never responded." The panel
cited reports of further contacts after Osama bin Laden returned to
Afghanistan in 1996, but said there was no working relationship.

Why were Osama and Iraq talking to each other then? Just friendly
chitchats, huh, according to the Kerry Klowns.......

Why were Osama and Iraq talking to each other then?

Because bn Laden had been attacking Iraq, while living in Sudan. Sudan
got scared that Iraq would hold it against them. So Sudan, with good
ties to both parties, asked them to meet to try to arrange cooperative
arrangements. So that Sudan would not be caught in the middle.
They met. Bin Laden suggested that Iraq provide assisitance to his
group. Approval for that was not forthcoming.
The parties continued on their separate ways.
And that is the example President Bush referred to to prove his case
of some sort of nefarious connection between Iraq and bin Laden.
That's apparently his best case.
And of course it shows that Iraq and bin Laden did NOT cooperate, not
the opposite.
Just friendly

chitchats, huh, according to the Kerry Klowns.......

According to the White House even. Iraq was NOt on the list of nations
supporting terrorism in recent times. How come?
Also the WH complained about some parts of the Sept 11 commission
report.
The part saying - there is no credible evidence of collaboration
between Iraq and al qaeda - did not generate any WH requests for
change. Mr Evans, the top flack at the WH, said in todays NY Times
that the reason was that the WH agreed with what was said.
What was said?
That there is no credible evidence of collaboration.
End of story.

Al Qaeda wanted to put training camps in Iraq - Iraq didn't respond.
