former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of an alleged tax law violation in
connection with a controversial college course he taught.
After considering the matter for three and a half years, the IRS issued a
"technical advice memorandum" finding no violation of tax laws in the use of
a tax-exempt entity to sponsor Gingrich's course, "Renewing American
Civilization."
Gingrich began the course in 1993, before Republicans won control of the
House and made him speaker. Gingrich's lectures were videotaped and widely
distributed.
Democrats said it was a campaign gimmick and filed ethics complaints
accusing him of illegal use of tax-exempt funds for political purposes. A
tax expert hired by the House Ethics Committee said the course violated tax
laws, and in 1997 Gingrich agreed to pay a $300,000 fine for making
misleading statements to the ethics panel and failing to seek better legal
advice before using tax-exempt money for the course.
As it turned out, the course was legal after all. The IRS found that the
sponsoring organization, the Progress and Freedom Foundation, "did not serve
the private interests of Mr. Gingrich" or Republican organizations.
The IRS said the principles taught in the course were not of use only in
political campaigns. "The ... course taught principles from American
civilization that could be used by each American in everyday life whether
the person is a welfare recipient, the head of a large corporation, or a
politician."
The IRS memorandum was released by the Progress and Freedom Foundation along
with a statement by its president, Jeff Eisenach. "This audit took too long
and cost too much," he said.

Whatever. McDermott is clearly a victim of a rightwing witch hunt. He was
originally cleared by the lower courts and sent back through the legal maze
by the Republican controlled USSC.
On the other hand Newt was found guilty the House Ethics Committee of
breaking tax laws, making misleading statements and not using credible
counsel before starting his scheme to evade taxes.
It only took the IRS three and a half yrs to clear him while in the mean
time the GOP took control of the House and no doubt began putting pressure
on the IRS to clear Newt.

How is that possible if he didn't do the wiretapping? It is hard to believe
that he is guilty considering that the real tapers of Boehner's conference

It is clearly a rightwing witch hunt to persecute McDermott. He was
originally found innocent by lower courts and the Republican controlled USSC
sent his case back through the legal maze until they could find someone to
convict him.

erroneous.
Consider, for example, if Jim takes out a mortgage at 5%. Over 10 years,
that's "50%", right?

It's still 5% interest.
Consider, for another example, Jim gets hired for $90K a year. The
government begins extracting approximately $10K each year out of Jim's hide,
for Social "Security". But after 5 years have gone by, Jim suddenly
realizes the government has taken approximately $50K of his money. Lo and
behold, Jim does some quick math and concludes, "That's over 50% they're
taking out of my paycheck! I make only $90K a year, but they've taken $50K
from me!"
Apparently Jim doesn't understand that percentage is a RATE, and that
because it is a RATE, the TIME PERIOD under discussion must be taken into
account.

And THAT statement is correct. It's YOUR use of percentage that is
erroneous.
Consider, for example, if Jim takes out a mortgage at 5%. Over 10 years,
that's "50%", right?
Wrong.
It's still 5% interest.
Consider, for another example, Jim gets hired for $90K a year. The
government begins extracting approximately $10K each year out of Jim's hide,
for Social "Security". But after 5 years have gone by, Jim suddenly
realizes the government has taken approximately $50K of his money. Lo and
behold, Jim does some quick math and concludes, "That's over 50% they're
taking out of my paycheck! I make only $90K a year, but they've taken $50K
from me!"
This a very stupid analogy.
Apparently Jim doesn't understand that percentage is a RATE, and that
because it is a RATE, the TIME PERIOD under discussion must be taken into
account.
Were not talking about compound interest rate and mortgages. I was
mocking the stupid statement "million dollar fine" along with
"$600,000+ plus interest" you made.
* Compound interest is paid on the original principal and on the
accumulated past interest.
Formula:
P is the principal (the initial amount you borrow or deposit)
r is the annual rate of interest (percentage)
n is the number of years the amount is deposited or borrowed for.
A is the amount of money accumulated after n years, including
interest.
When the interest is compounded once a year:
A = P(1 + r)n
geeze, You need to take a math class.
