BOSTON (Reuters) - Thirty-one cents of every dollar spent on

health

care in the United States pays administrative costs -- nearly

double

the rate in Canada, according to a new comparison that sees

colossal

bureaucratic waste in the American system.

There is no question that US healthcare costs are
inflated beyond belief.

A friend of mine from Toronto was visiting her son in
Frisco when she slipped getting out of the tub and
fractured her upper arm. The ambulance alone was $900
and the hospital $40,000. She was not even admitted.
That is beyond bizarre.

$40,000 for sitting in the emergeny room and then getting a cast on

your

arm? I don't believe it.

I think Pulver made that one up.

It is definitely made up. I have a bill right here in front of me for an ER
visit at a Canadian hospital--Total: $155.80 American--must less expensive
than an uninsured visit to an ER in the US.

You are contradicting yourself. At St Vincent's
hospital in NYC I was treated, rather poorly, for a
broken wrist received in a mugging. The bill was
$1,500 and I told them to send it to the Crime victims
fund operated out of the Manhattan DA's office
It definitely is much less expensive in a Canadian
Hospital because the fees are controlled by the
insurer. In Ontario it is called the Ontario Hospital
Insurance Plan or OHIP.
In April, I had emergency surgery at the Shouldice
Clinic, a world renowned facility. I was there 3 days
and two nights and I left a check for $200 for the semi
private room (that is all SC has and OHIP only pays for
public care (ward).
It was going to cost me $35,000 to have my knees done
by the best in the world, Dr Paul Pellicci at the
Hospital for Special Surgery (dey no sick peepul in
dere) so I moved to Toronto and it did not cost me a
dime. Tuesday I will have my third CAT Scan. My
physician and my cardiologist agree it is likely a
waste of time, but it is free so why should I care?
How much does it cost for a cataract removal with lens
implant. Well, when my friend Dr William Friedman did
my then girlfriend Jane's eyes at the eye and ear
infirmary he charged $5,000 each ......... but that was
15 years ago. I had one done 6 months ago and the
second is coming up soon, cost ? the fare going &
coming from the hospital.
No! I don't have to dream up anything like that. Been
there ..... done that and bought the Tshirt.

Well, no Pulver, it's not free. What you're describing is an abuse of the
system, especially so if you moved to Canada just so it wouldn't cost you a
dime. It costs the system and in turn, it costs Canadian tax payers. No,
we're not turfing people out on the street for lack of insurance but the
system is under pressure especially because of the SARS outbreak. Come to
think of it, you might actually be full of crap. Third CAT scan for no
reason? Ya, sure. If on the outside chance it's true, I hope you're proud
of yourself. Maybe you'd like to laugh it up with one of my parents the
next time their surgery is delayed.

But you should get the facts straight before you start
ranting; it does make you look foolish.

Perhaps you should provide the facts to start with then. I do appreciate
you clarifying the situation though.

Why? Are you saying that humans shouldn't use governments to get their
best desserts?

It costs the system and in turn, it costs Canadian tax payers.

Who cares? Aren't we all in it to get the best deal for ourselves?

You've got six people sick.

Due to the fact that Canada is crewed up?

The only reason we got a bill from the Canadian ER was because we were not
Canadian citizens. We are from Ohio and were vacationing in Canada at the
time (August, 2003).
