Generals reassess enemy in Iraq

The rising optimism that enveloped the Pentagon last spring about
victory in Iraq has given way to more sober assessments that the
insurgency will stay somewhat robust for months or years to come.
That's what President Bush said, right back at the beginning. He said this
war on Muslim terrorism would be a different kind of war, and that it would
be a long war.
As you say, the generals make the same sober assessments about Iraq as does
the Administration.

You're rewriting history. Presidents, and Bush in particular, use
mouthpieces to push their agenda. Bush's administration told us how easy
it would be to take over Iraq speaking about "days" or "weeks" and
"cakewalk."
President Bush, 5/1/03:
http://zfacts.com/p/87.html
"Thank you all very much. Admiral Kelly, Captain Card, officers and
sailors of the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln, my fellow Americans: Major combat
operations in Iraq have ended."
Vice President Cheney,
http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A44801-2003Mar28?language=printer
"Cheney also predicted the fight would "go relatively quickly, but we
can't count on that." That same day on NBC's "Meet the Press," Cheney
said, "I think things have gotten so bad inside Iraq, from the standpoint
of the Iraqi people, my belief is we will, in fact, be greeted as
liberators." It was then he predicted that the regular Iraqi soldiers
would not "put up such a struggle," and that even "significant elements of
the Republican Guard . . . are likely to step aside." Asked if Americans
are prepared for a "long, costly and bloody battle," Cheney replied:
"Well, I don't think it's likely to unfold that way. . . . The read we get
on the people of Iraq is there is no question but what they want to the
get rid of Saddam Hussein, and they will welcome as liberators the United
States when we come to do that." Cheney has spoken that way for months."
I realize you'd like not to hear the lies Bush has told us but Iraq's
history cannot be changed as easily as his military record.
Ken Adelman:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A1996-2002Feb12?language=printer
"I believe demolishing Hussein's military power and liberating Iraq would
be a cakewalk. Let me give simple, responsible reasons: (1) It was a
cakewalk last time; (2) they've become much weaker; (3) we've become much
stronger; and (4) now we're playing for keeps."
Richard Perle:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3068411/site/newsweek/
"The first two weeks of war have not exactly been the “cakewalk”
predicted by Richard Perle, ex-chairman of the Pentagon’s Defense Policy
Board. Western troops, their numbers low on the ground and their supply
lines under siege, have been bedeviled by false surrenders and soldiers
disguised as civilians."
Donald Rumsfeld:
http://zfacts.com/p/87.html
"I can't tell you if the use of force in Iraq today will last five days,
five weeks or five months, but it won't last any longer than that."
As you say, the generals make the same sober assessments about Iraq as
does the Administration.
That's their job. It's also the administration's job to tell us the
truth. As I've shown above they lied. And you've lied about their words.

Nope, that is EXACTLY what President Bush said, several years ago, when our
war on Muslim terrorism began. He said it would be a different kind of war,
and he said it would be a LONG war.
Once again, President Bush was exactly right, and the generals are making
the SAME assessments about Iraq as does the Administration.

That's almost a direct quote from the State of the Union of 2002, IIRC.
Mike
