I agree with you that Gonzales is not much,
but Wolfowitz was thrown to the wolves by
the folks at the corrupt WB who didn't want
to change their ways.

Actually Wolfowitz made enemies at the world bank from day one and lost the
support of the staff from the moment he arrived. May I suggest a boss who
loses that support isn't really competent and sets himself or herself up
for speedy removal. He's a failure as a leader and a failure as a planner,
whether you like him or not.

He lost support from those who did not want
corruption dealt with in a serious manner.

Attempting to clean out the swamp ruffled a lot
of feathers at the WB. Too bad there weren't
enough good folks with the courage to stand
against corruption. I have more respect for
someone willing to resign when he cannot get
enough on his side to clean up a mess, than for
someone who is willing to compromise his
principles to stay in a position.

First most of the cleaning at the world bank was begun under Wolfowitz's
predecessor, who didn't make as many enemies on the staff. 2nd, Wolfowitz
didn't exactly show high moral character or an understanding of what a
conflict of interest was when he arranged for his companion to get a higher
paying job at another agency. There are other examples of his lack of
understanding of what ethics are too.
That being said, if you become the individual in charge, it is up to your
leadership skills to get done what you are supposed to get done. Wolfowitz
had to convince two groups of people, the board of directors and the
employees who had to implement his concepts, he failed at both. He's a
failure and I have my doubts about someone who fails to seek advice on a
possible obvious conflict of interest from folks like the general counsel
at the World Bank. If this was just an oversight on his part, it was
sufficient to give a handle on removing a disliked chief, once again no
leadership skills and little evidence of high moral standards too!

Wolfowitz made enemies because they all favored and benefited from the
status quo. He didn't do anything wrong, and the WB would have been
better off with the changes he wanted to make.

Just wondering, but do you know what a conflict of interest is and why you
live in companion isn't supposed to work for you unless you own the
company?

Sure. Are you aware of the details of what transpired? Doesn't sound
like you are.

Sure I am! Wolfowitz claims he was told to find his live in companion
another position that he did not supervise by the board of directors.

Wrong. Upon first taking the position, Wolfowitz reported the
relationship to the bank's ethics committee.

What
you apparently miss is that he didn't do due diligence and get legal
opinions about what he planned for her.

Wrong. Wolfowitz requested of the ethics committee that he be *recused*
from matters relating to his girlfriend. That request was denied. The
committee then recommended that he have her seek employment elsewhere and
be compensated fairly, including consideration for the seniority she'd
acheived in her position.

First, he arranged for a much
higher raise for her when she transferred than comparable workers at the
World Bank, he also failed to investigate just how much of a raise she
should have received. He also failed to inquire of the World Bank general
counsel or other legal counsel whether he could ethically or legally get
involved in finding her a new position or a raise.

Again, you are wrong. The WB's ethics committee directed him to find her
the new position - after he asked to be recused from involvement.

It's a conflict of interest to do what he did, plain and simple, there is no
getting around what he did. His plans for dealing with corruption seems to
have missed dealing with the appearance of possible corruption in his
behavior too!

As I surmised, you're not aware of what happened. After he found her the
job, the ethics committee sent him two letters - one thanking him for his
help in finding Ms. Riza another position, and another acknowledging that
the matter was closed.
One of the members of the ethics committee that insisted on his
involvement is now one of the ones criticizing the same.

Nope, I'm not incorrect, I've heard Wolfie make that claim on NPR and the
BBC in his own words. Yes, I did not mention your above claim but note
that afterwards, he did claim he was ordered to find her another position.
May I suggest you review the facts about Wolfowitz before arguing on his
behalf. By his own admission, he admits involvement in the procedure,
which incidentally was a conflict of interest inherently.
