Researching that part now....
Each state conducts its own tests on the software and machines before
they are used in the election. Among other things they set all the
clocks to Election day and run mock elections, checking the vote
totals to make sure these match against what was actually cast. The
machines & software have no way of knowing if they're "live or
Memorex" during the testing. With hundreds of software engineers and
programmers checking the accuracy of the machines nationwide, who in
his right mind would try to load a virus?
