WASHINGTON - Congress should coalesce behind sweeping new compromise
immigration legislation despite steep political obstacles because
opportunities to confront the problem head-on are rare, Sen. Edward
Kennedy said Friday.

Kennedy, the lead Democratic negotiator with Republicans and the White
House, acknowledged widespread criticism but called it "our last-gasp
stand."

I wonder who he is talking about when he says, "our"?

I know he is not talking about the black and white workers in this
country, because I'm a union member, and most union members are
democrats. Trade unions are not for a guest worker program.

The non-union workers are scared of this guest worker program, because
they are not represented by a union, and have no protection, and will be
the first to lose their jobs to illiterate Mexicans, that will work for
what ever the employer will pay.

When he said "our", he must have meant him and the rest of the
socialists, and communists in the democratic leadership.

Why are opportunities to confront the problem rare? What's so special
about now? Why the rush? I don't get it.

After August, the D.C. pols will be too involved with the 2008 elections....AAC

And that is when you hold their feet to the fire, and make _genuine_
immigration reform -- Enforcement First, Enforcement Only, and Attrition
Through Enforcement -- the only issue they hear about. The War in Iraq
should be a very nearly settled issue by the time the elections roll
around, and the only two things that should be laid before candidates
should be Immigration Reform Without Amnesty, and Energy Costs/Climate
Change.
