The example set by the owners and staff of Fran O'Brien's Steak House
has moved everyone who hears of it. That is the establishment in
Washington DC where every Friday Night soldiers and marines
recuperating from serious wounds at Walter Reed and Bethesda Naval are

Background:
In Washington there is a restaurant, Fran O'Brien's Steak House. One
of the owners, Hal Koster, is a Vietnam vet. He is very committed to
helping soldiers, particularly those who have been wounded and/or who
are having a hard time reintegrating into society. Starting in Oct.
2003, he started offering a Friday Night Out for severely wounded
soldiers and marines who were recuperating at nearby Walter Reed Army
Medical Center (in DC) and National Naval Medical Center (in Bethesda,
MD). The deal is a full steak dinner with all the dressing, including
a dessert and open bar. FOR FREE TO SOLDIERS, THEIR FAMILIES AND STAFF
at these hospitals. Moreover, he has committed to do this UNTIL THE
LAST SOLDIER FROM THIS CONFLICT HAS LEFT WALTER REED AND BETHESDA.
The staff at Fran O'Brien's have also embraced this cause. They have
all received special training so they can handle the kinds of
disabilities they see. For example, the chef knows how to puree a
steak so that a soldier missing his or her jaw can actually enjoy it.
Issue/Problem:
Fran O'Brien's is in the basement of the Capitol Hilton. There are
about 20 steps to get down there. There is an escalator, but it has
been out of commission since 1998! They have been fighting with Hilton
to get this fixed for years. Hilton addressed the problem by boarding
it up. Their lease was up for renewal the end of 2005. During the
negotiations, they asked Hilton to put in a lift for the wheel chairs.
The response of Hilton was to serve them with an eviction notice. They
are currently scheduled to be evicted the end of April.
When you speak to staff at the restaurant or the hospitals it is clear
that what is at stake here is more than a free steak dinner. This is a
very theraputic experience for the patients. It is a rare opportunity
for someone who has a face that makes little children cry to find a
place where they can be treated with respect. It's about reclaiming
dignity.
Even if other restaurants offer to step in and help, no one can expect
anyone to match the level of commitment the owners and staff of Fran
O'Brien's have demonstrated. That is simply not the level of service
you ask of people. It has to be offered. Even if other restaurants
offered to do this, the logistics of starting something like this will
be daunting. Success is not likely. Hilton could review the request
for a lift. There are veterans groups such as the American Legion (who
have their headquarters across the street) that are offering to step in
and help finance this.
Solution:
Hilton renews Fran O'Brien's lease. Hilton works with interested
community members to bring the area up to compliance with ADA.
Conclusion:
Moving a huge corporation like Hilton will require a public campaign.
Regardless of where you stand on the war, everyone stands with the
people who are stuck fighting it. This is not a partisan issue. It is
not Right v. Left. It is Right v. Wrong. People on the Left care about
these people. People on the Right care about these people. We care
about the same people because they are our people. They are a bridge
for us to work together.
Fran O'Brien's is a place for wounded service men and women to find
comradeship and healing, to build connections with veterans who have
similarly suffered both in the current conflict and in previous
conflicts. This is an opportunity for people on the Left to reach out
to those of like mind on the Right and vice versa. I believe this is
a healing we need as a nation. Working together from across the
political spectrum will benefit those who participate begin to rid
their systems of the poison we have been fed for the last few years by
the Weapons of Mass Distraction. We need to get better so we can face
the real problems threatening all of us.
Next Steps:
I propose a four prong approach.
i) People of like minds need to connect online and let the other side
know we appreciate their support.
ii) We need to work together to boycott Hilton properties:
Hilton
Doubletree
Hampton Inn
Embassy Suites
and associated brands
iii) Working together we need to look at other creative ways to get
this message out to the general public: We cannot get a good night's
sleep at a Hilton while the Hilton turns its back on our troops.
iv) We need to extend this boycott to include Paris Hilton's marketing
as well. There is no reason she should be feted and receive a Bentley
when Hilton Hotels refuses to fix an escalator or put in a lift so
wounded vets can have equal access to a night out.
