influence to the policy of religious 'openness' adopted during the reign
of King Solomon. This saw the erection of temples to Baal and Astoreth
in Israel. Interestingly, I have read that Masons claim 'spiritual
descendance' if you will, from the Builders of Solomon's Temple..
Unless the texts I have read are false, this is reflected in the ceremonies
of early Scottish Rite or Red Lodge Masonry. Some discern here a connection
between Masonry an the Relgious Mysteries which originated
in Mesopotania. Whatever the truth, it seems obvious to me that many Masons
are at pains to obscure their esoteric roots,

Were these roots publicly professed I could well imagine the moral panic
that would be initiated by their enemies.. so perhaps such anxieties are
understandable. Yet the truth DOES matter.. I'm just not sure how it can
be accurately discerned from without in view of the uncertainty and
obfuscation caused by the play of interests.
