It's simple: freedom is the ability to do whatever you want, to live however
you like, as long as you are not hurting anybody else.

I agree 100%, but in the allegedly "free country" called America, the
definition has changed. Here is how one presidential candidate defines
freedom:
" - FREEDOM IS NOT A CONCEPT IN WHICH PEOPLE CAN DO ANYTHING THEY WANT, BE
ANYTHING THEY CAN BE. FREEDOM IS ABOUT AUTHORITY. FREEDOM IS ABOUT THE
WILLINGNESS OF EVERY SINGLE HUMAN BEING TO CEDE TO LAWFUL AUTHORITY A GREAT
DEAL OF DISCRETION ABOUT WHAT YOU DO AND HOW YOU DO IT."
- Mayor Giuliani, quoted in the New York Times, March 17, 1994.

the addicted affect the lives of family, friends, and society as a

In general, you are right. However, if I am a wealthy, retired individual,
living alone, never driving while intoxicated, never bothering anybody else,
drinking only inside my own home, then my alcoholism is none of your
business.
