Oh you mean that the rest of the world measures things in feet, inches,
yards, miles, ounces, pounds and the like. Somehow I don't think so.
Further, have you noticed that the US trade deficit is up? The US economy
is in trouble while those of Europe and much of the rest of the world seem
to be moving along.
Once again, you didn't pay attention to details and tried to give us
jingoism and nonsense!

Means the US isn't an economic leader except in deficits

Just because you know what horse manure is doesn't mean that you're correct.
I note how you cannot list things the US is considered a leader in that the
rest of the world would want to emulate either.

Dream On,

Name a rational scenario that doesn't involve the various factions in Iraq
trying to settle things without foreign troops to hold down the violence!

It's more like fear and loathing for the idiots who drove the US to that

You probably saw that NYC is booming because of foreign tourists who
are finding coming here cheap. Since I go there a lot I can
tell you that yes it's booming wrt people. When the sidewalks
are often gridlocked, as they are in many places in Manhattan
anyway, that's proof enough for me!

Sadly tourism in general doesn't produce good paying jobs. Many of the jobs
generated are for retail clerks, poorly paid "tour guides", and hotel
workers. NYC incidentally has always had a lot of folks from "out of town"
wandering around except when the media made NYC seem so dangerous that it
scared folks away. Pardon my cynicism but lower prices for things in the
USA isn't going to make the US better off unless the US starts produces
things the rest of the world wants to buy.

Yeah, but in many instances, like here, that's(and other
bits of the hospitality industry) all we've
got for people who don't have a lot of education.

Many of the jobs
generated are for retail clerks, poorly paid "tour guides", and hotel

So what do you suggest since we're not going to have
places like this ever again:
http://www.philly.com/inquirer/local/20080115_Families_with_heart_of_steel.html

NYC incidentally has always had a lot of folks from "out of town"

Incidentally Art, sometimes you are so downright patronizing, like
you are the only one on the planet who knows anything or thinks
about issues, that it distracts from your general POV which, many times,
I agree with you.
To get back to your point above, I KNOW NEW YORK HAS ALWAYS
HAD OUT-OF-TOWN VISITORS! I go there all the time and have
for 40 years, all right?

wandering around except when the media made NYC seem so dangerous that it
scared folks away.

Well, that was bollocks, in a way, because there still were PLENTY of people
then too.

Pardon my cynicism but lower prices for things in the
USA isn't going to make the US better off unless the US starts produces
things the rest of the world wants to buy.

Like what besides airplanes wrt manufactured goods?

I have to wonder why more students in Philadelphia can't be educated for
decent trades like electrical work, plumbing and the like or why unions
don't apprentice more Philadelphians. There are other choices, we don't
educate or train for them.

Many of the jobs

So what do you suggest since we're not going to have

I'ld suggest concentrating on jobs with a long likelihood of surviving,
rather than in effect preparing students with an education more suited to
1930 than now in the public schools.

Well, that was bollocks, in a way, because there still were PLENTY of
people then too.

Lots of folks wondered how I could ride the subway in NYC at night, it was
relatively safer and a lot more reliable than waiting for a cab. I still
remember tourists clutching their wallets and showing just how much they
were carrying, making them in effect victims. In fact, just avoiding
places with few people at night made mugging and other crimes a whole lot
less likely. If the media had emphasized simple safety rules like that,
there would never have been the fear that lead to NYC declining. Of
course, Koch as mayor made things worse too with his policies, but I guess
people forget his record.

Like what besides airplanes wrt manufactured goods?

The US can produce high tech items like LCD screens, LED screens, and even
semiconductors. Most of the savings experienced in production in Asia is
because of investment in better techniques and equipment rather than labor
savings. Lot tech things like hammers might not be a good choice, but high
tech is. Similarly, there is no reason the US can't manufacture cars and
other items other folks will buy, rather than large pickup trucks and SUVs.

Orleans Tech, which you probably know has just expanded its campus, can only
do so much. There are people there now, who are ex-offenders, who
are determined to stay out of prison and I, certainly, congratulate
them for trying to do just that!
Now if only the local building trades would do what they are supposed to:
*de-segregate*. I'm sure you are following that story as am I.

Right. I've *always* ridden the subway up there. I was more concerned
about the condition of some trains, years ago, and about whether they would
physically make it, than anything having to do with my personal
safety a la muggings.
I've never felt any fear in NYC even when 8th Ave and 42nd St looked
awful and had a lot of porn shops or the Bowery was loaded with bums
(the Bowery is still kinda crappy) and so on. Now Times Sq is like "Disneyland"
or Vegas. It's cleaner which is fine but making it safe for
folks from, say, Kansas City, is well, not what a great/interesting
city is supposed to about.

I still
remember tourists clutching their wallets and showing just how much they
were carrying, making them in effect victims.

Some of them are probably still doing that!

In fact, just avoiding
places with few people at night made mugging and other crimes a whole lot
less likely.

Well, a friend of mine and I used to go to just borning clubs in the
meat packing district 20 years ago, when it was pretty bad
around there and no was living around there and, you guessd it...
no one got mugged. Not a darned thing happened.

If the media had emphasized simple safety rules like that,
there would never have been the fear that lead to NYC declining.

And people wonder why I stopped watching TV. I mean this is it:
fear-mongering when my own experience told me the danger
was a lot less than the media would have people believe.
Of

course, Koch as mayor made things worse too with his policies, but I guess

people forget his record.

I haven't!

But we're not, are we? Not the monitors/screens in any case.

Most of the savings experienced in production in Asia is
because of investment in better techniques and equipment rather than labor
savings. Lot tech things like hammers might not be a good choice, but high
tech is. Similarly, there is no reason the US can't manufacture cars and

I'm really hoping that the American car industry can recover as new
tech(green) cars come along.
