Rep. Jane Harman: phase out incandescent bulbs |
source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rep-jane-harman/a-bright-idea-for-america_b_43519.html
The old joke revolves around how many people it takes to change a
light bulb. The answer is: 218 members of Congress, 51 Senators and
one President.

I use fluorescent bulbs all around my house. They consume a fraction
of incandescent bulbs, operate cool, and provide adequate lighting. We
get them at Sam's Club cheap. WalMart has them cheap too.
But the real payoff is that we don't have to replace them. I am still
using one in my desk lamp I installed over 2 years ago. I used to have
to replace the incandescent bulb every 3 months from the
self-destruction caused by excess heat in the lamp itself.
In fact we haven't bought incadescant bulbs since we began using
fluorescant bulbs.

Hmmm, I've not been so lucky. They never lasted as long as advertised. Some
stipulated they couldn't be installed in a hanging or downward fashion. The
supposed equivalent in wattage was weaker in brightness. Some fixtures
wouldn't accept them because of shape. I've spent more on them only to be
disappointed in performance and it's harsh light. I gave them up and have
only one bulb left that is still working.
I am surprised that more advances have not been made as long as they have
been available so I will consider them a fad for now and a must for true
enviros until they are improved.

You may have gotten a low-end supermarket brand.

Try Sam's Club.
