Ravenel Quits State Treasurer's Post
COLUMBIA, S.C. --
South Carolina Treasurer Thomas Ravenel resigned from office on
Tuesday.
The announcement came as Ravenel made his first appearance in federal
court on a cocaine charge following his release from a drug treatment
program in Arizona.
Attorneys for the Republican treasurer had entered a not-guilty plea
on his behalf earlier this month.
Gov. Mark Sanford suspended Ravenel from his duties after he was
charged in June.
Sanford appointed Ken Wingate as interim state treasurer.
Soon after his arrest, Ravenel stepped down as the chairman of GOP
presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani's South Carolina campaign.
Ravenel told reporters outside the courthouse he's "deeply
disappointed" in himself.
He apologized to the state and his family.
Ravenel is charged with possession with intent to distribute less than
500 grams of cocaine.
Investigators said the 44-year-old multimillionaire developer shared
cocaine with his friends and did not sell the drug.
Ravenel entered a 30-day treatment program on June 22.
At his arraignment, U.S. Magistrate Joseph McCrorey ordered Ravenel to
appear in court within 48 hours of being released from the Sierra
Tucson Center in Catalina, Ariz.
Ravenel made that appearance on Tuesday morning.
