Republican Ex-Superintendent of Ga. Schools Indicted |
Schrenko, a Republican, was elected to two terms as superintendent and
served from 1994 to 2002 before seeking the GOP gubernatorial
nomination.
She lost to Sonny Perdue, who went on to become governor that year.
Also indicted were two of Schrenko's former associates -- Merle Temple
Jr., the state's former deputy superintendent and Schrenko's
gubernatorial campaign manager, and Stephan Botes, the owner of an
Atlanta computer consulting company.
No one answered telephone calls made to Temple's home.
The phone number to Botes' business was disconnected.

ATLANTA --
Georgia's former schools superintendent has been indicted on charges
that she stole more than $600,000 in federal education funds and spent
the money on cosmetic surgery and her failed campaign for governor.
Prosecutors say nearly half the money went to former School
Superintendent Linda Schrenko's 2002 gubernatorial bid, with another
$9,300 being spent on the surgery.
"It's a rather blatant theft of federal funds," federal prosecutor
Russell Vineyard said Wednesday.
