Former Pataki Aide Facing Drug Charge
Dec 20, 2005
An official with a state agency who served as George Pataki's
spokeswoman during his first campaign for governor has been charged
with drug possession.
Albany police say 45-year-old Caroline Quartararo was stopped after
officers saw her attempt to purchase crack cocaine on a city street
Monday night.
Detective James Miller says officers found three pieces of crack in
her car.
She was arraigned in Albany Police Court and released.
She's due back in court January 5.
Quartararo is executive deputy director of the state Consumer
Protection Board.
Pataki appointed her to the $100,000-a-year job in January.
She had served as communications director last year for former
Republican Assemblyman Howard Mills in his unsuccessful campaign to
unseat U.S. Senator Charles Schumer.
Quartararo served as a spokeswoman for Pataki's campaign in 1994 when
he beat Mario Cuomo in the governor's race.
She went on to a series of jobs in the Pataki administration before
joining the Mills campaign.

At least she was arrested after she got the job. A New York State
Assemblywoman from Nassau got a seat on the Workers' Compensation Board
four months ago after she was charged with running for her Assembly
office using an abandoned house as her district home address. She
resigned her Assembly elected position and now the new Nassau DA will
decide whether to indict her for election fraud.
