Arizona treasurer's dealings with Oklahoma nonprofit questioned
OKLAHOMA CITY --
The relationship between Arizona's state treasurer and an Oklahoma
City-based nonprofit group remains the focus of a criminal
investigation in Arizona.
David Petersen, a Republican former state senator who was elected
Arizona's state treasurer in 2002, already has opted not to run for
re-election because of the investigation, but he insists he has
committed no crime.
The Arizona state investigation of Petersen, a longtime proponent of
character education, involves allegations of fraud, theft and conflict
of interest, according to official legal documents released in
February after special agents raided his state office.
Andrea Esquer, a spokeswoman for the Arizona Attorney General's
office, said the investigation remains pending.
Petersen's former executive assistant has accused him of using state
resources and traveling at state expense to promote the Character
First! program, which was developed by the Character Training
Institute of Oklahoma City.
The institute has been a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization since
1999.
