PROVIDENCE, R.I. --Ousted Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee
criticized President Bush's handling of the Israeli-Palestinian peace
process Monday and suggested the president was bowing to a faction
of evangelical Christians who oppose a Palestinian state.
"The religious thing is driving the foreign policy here," Chafee said
following a speech at Brown University in which he questioned
whether the president's past comments pushing for peace were sincere.
"I have wondered something else about this president, who promised
us he would be a uniter and not a divider, who led us into Iraq to
vanquish the threat posed by weapons of mass destruction. Has this
been a deliberate deception?" he continued.
Criticizing the president is nothing new for Chafee. He didn't vote for
Bush in the 2004 presidential election, instead writing in Bush's father
as a form of protest. He also has criticized Bush's handling of the war
in Iraq, and voted against authorizing Bush to go to war.
Chafee also called the Israeli-Palestinian peace process a critical
component of stability in Iraq. He said it was far more important to put
that conflict on the front burner than it was to send 20,000 additional
troops to Iraq, a move he opposes.
Chafee served just over a single term, having been appointed in 1999
to fill the shoes of his father, Sen. John Chafee, who died in office.
He has said since the loss of his Senate seat that he's not sure if he
belongs in the Republican Party.
