Object: Republicans make tiresome dishonest claim of being best on national security.
Giuliani has suggested that if a Democrat is elected president in
2008, we'll be at a greater risk for another terrorist attack on the
scale of 9/11.
The implication is if we even consider a Democrat for President, we do
so at our own peril.
Wouldn't it be refreshing to be offered candidates of substance for a
change instead of more run-of-the-mill spin doctors?
Don't hold your breath.

Republicans make tiresome claim of being best on national security
By Tyrone Brummeyer
Recently while campaigning in New Hampshire, Rudy Giuliani stated,
"America will be safer with a Republican president."
He credited Republicans with the unique ability to anticipate and
obstruct terrorist plots.
If this sort of rhetoric sounds familiar, it should.
We've heard it before, most notably during the 2004 presidential
campaign.
Then, as now, the assertion was that America requires a Republican
president to deal with terrorism; electing a Democrat only increases
our vulnerability.
The only difference this time around is the candidate.
Both of our major parties make a living out of selling themselves as
the "best hope" for America.
During presidential campaigns the air is rife with vacuous claims that
party "X" represents our savior, but its counterpart will lead us to
destruction.
This type of language may be effective in mobilizing a party's base,
but I find it tiresome and incredibly dishonest.
When Republicans are asked to offer tangible evidence to support their
suggestion that they're superior to Democrats on terrorism, they
usually point to the same thing: No terrorist attack on our soil since
9/11.
They attribute this to the policies of President Bush and his
Republican allies.
In fact, Giuliani has concluded that the best way to ensure our safety
is to elect another Republican president, him.
Maybe it's just me, but something about this line of reasoning doesn't
quite pass the smell test.
On September 11, 2001 America suffered its most devastating terrorist
attack in history when four airplanes were hijacked and used as
suicide bombs.
Nearly 3000 Americans perished.
The American President at the time: George W. Bush, Republican.
The entire nation was anguished over the events, but hardest hit was
New York City where the attack resulted in the utter annihilation of
monumental city landmarks, and the horrifying loss of countless
civilians.
The New York City Mayor at the time: Rudolph Giuliani, Republican.
What's conveniently absent from these pronouncements that Republicans
will keep us safe is that Republicans occupied both of these offices
and we were still attacked.
The most devastating terrorist act in American history took place on
their watch and they still insist they're the most qualified to
protect us.
