Right-Wing Attacks American Evacuees: ‘Ingrates,’ ‘Whining,’
‘Spoiled-Rotten Little Children’
The Bush administration’s evacuation of Americans in Lebanon has been
disorganized and lagged behind the efforts of other countries.
http://www.forbes.com/entrepreneurs/feeds/ap/2006/07/20/ap2892066.html
As of yesterday, only a few thousand had been able to evacuate, and
they departed "two days after the first Europeans left on ships."
Denmark, for example, "evacuated more than 4,000 of its citizens" by
Thursday.

Conservatives have reacted to this incompetence by attacking the
evacuees:
Rush Limbaugh, 7/19:
http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_071906/content/america_s_anchorman.LogIn.html
Even in the eyes of our ingrate, spoiled-rotten little children,
brat-type ingrate citizens in Beirut, it’s our fault. (Crying.) “It’s
a war zone. It’s a war! How do I get out? (crying) We’re having to
shield ourselves from the sun in cardboard.” (sobbing) That’s
embarrassing.
Fox anchor Neil Cavuto, 7/20:
The media is playing up a lot of whining, complaining Americans in
this country who said there’s been no warning, no communication.
TownHall.com columnist Mike Gallagher, 7/21:
http://www.townhall.com/columnists/column.aspx?UrlTitle=stuck_in_lebanon&ns=MikeGallagher&dt=07/21/2006&page=2
Amazingly, we’re not even going to charge these ungrateful evacuees
for the free trip home. -- Their sense of outrage and entitlement is
slowly but surely becoming the American way. And it’s positively
disgusting.
Fox anchor Steve Doocy, 7/19:
Shockingly, after they’ve been plucked out of Beirut, a lot of them
are whining and complaining that, you know what, I had to sleep on the
concrete and they didn’t have any food for me to eat.

US advice on travel to Israel - it's ok, but don't go where a rocket
might land.
Kinda stupid advice?
Anyway, here's the quote from travel.state.gov:
---
"In light of this situation, the Department of State urges U.S. citizens
to weigh carefully the risk of travel to Israel and Jerusalem at this
time and to defer travel to affected parts of Israel (missile attacks
have focused on the area north of an east-west line from the coastal
city of Haifa to Tiberius on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee,
including those cities, and on Sderot and Ashkelon in the south). In
addition, the Department of State urges U.S. citizens to defer travel to
the West Bank and to avoid all travel to the Gaza Strip. "

Interesting. The same could be said about the evacuated settlers in
Gaza.
They made the decision to live on stolen land, which, as was clear from
the start of the settlement enterprise, might have to be evacuated if
the political situation changes.
Yet they are getting 300,000$ apiece, more or less directly from the US
governament!

I wonder why no neocon shill pointed that out?!

It's not as if Washington had some magical crystal ball that could
warn us about this coming. I mean, maybe, just maybe if the State
Department had taken care to warn Americans of the potential hazards
of middle eastern war say, about the time Hamas started firing rockets
into Israel from Gaza. Or maybe when they tunneled into Israel,
kidnapped a soldier. Or even when two more Israeli soldiers got
kidnapped by Hizbullah. Condoleeza didn't even issue an advisory to
Americans to leave the region when the Israelis started bombing
Beirut. Not until after the Israelis took out the airport apparently
without any warning to the Bush administration (God help us if they
did warn Bush and he did nothing) that they were about to do so did
the government so much as acknowledge the possibility that maybe it
wasn't a good idea for Americans to be hangin' in Lebanon.
The didn't see it coming. They didn't see Hamas' Gaza attacks coming.
They didn't see the Iraqi insurgency coming. They didn't see the
shift in world opinion against us coming. They didn't see the
resurgence in Taliban power coming.
How can you fight an enemy when you can't see him coming?

--------------
The State Dept. issued a public announcement last month alerting
Americans to ongoing security concerns in the Middle East and North
Africa. While it doesn't say AVOID LEBANON AT ALL COSTS, I think it is
strong enough to dissuade the average person who knows anything about
what's going on in the Middle East from vacationing in Beirut. Americans
make excellent kidnap for ransom targets. Did you know?
