Former Talk Show Host Could Be Sent To Prison
HOUSTON --
A former Houston radio talk show host could be sent to prison after he
was accused of violating his probation for indecency with a child,
KPRC Local 2 reported.
The Fort Bend County district attorney wants Jon Matthews' probation
revoked and wants him sent to prison.
Matthews pleaded guilty in August 2004 to indecency with a child by
exposure after he exposed himself to a neighbor's 11-year-old
daughter.
He received a seven-year probated sentence.
But the state contends Matthews has violated conditions of his
probation, including engaging in online chat rooms of a sexual nature
against children.
In court, Judge Grady Elliot said he was also concerned that Matthews
has expressed a desire to end his own life.
Matthews and his attorney appeared in the Fort Bend County court
Thursday, where the judge decided on a continuance.
The judge said he wants to wait on a psychological report of Matthews
before making his ruling, which is set for Jan. 3.
Prosecutors are expected to ask to have Matthews sent to prison for up
to 10 years.
The Fort Bend County district attorney's office said Matthews violated
his probation in several ways -- excessive drinking, not completing a
counseling program, using the Internet in a manner inconsistent with
conditions of his probation and getting within 1,000 feet of a school.
Restrictions for Matthews' probation included:
registering as a sex offender
having no contact with the victim or any other children
keeping at least 1,000 feet away from schools, playgrounds and any
other place children gather
performing 160 hours of community service
Matthews resigned from KSEV AM shortly after his indictment.
