WOMEN'S RIGHTS -- 33 YEARS LATER, ROE STILL UNDER ATTACK:
Sunday marks the 33rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade, affirming a woman's right
to have an abortion. While the U.S. Supreme Court recently "recognized its
precedent that abortion laws must protect women's health and safety" in a
case involving a New Hampshire parental notification law, anti-abortion
activists "are using the states as laboratories" to eventually overturn Roe,
said Nancy Kennan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America.
According to a NARAL report, state legislatures enacted 58 measures in 2005
restricting access to abortion, double the number enacted in 2004. Indiana
and Ohio are proposing broad bans on abortion, which lawmakers hope to have
upheld in a more conservative court under Chief Justice John Roberts and
possibly Samuel Alito.
