Rumsfeld must quit over abuse
Democracy demands accountability

The appalling scandal of the abuse of Iraqi detainees at Abu Ghraib
prison by US servicemen leads to inevitable conclusions.
The first is that the grilling of Donald Rumsfeld, the US Secretary of
Defense, by senior senators showed the rigour and openness of American
democracy at its very best.
The second is that that very process should lead to Rumsfeld's
resignation.
As defence secretary he was responsible for establishing a network of
prisons which have operated outside the rule of law with the
devastating consequences that we see today.
The prisons' management has presumed guilt over innocence and allowed
torture and abuse on a grand scale.
He should resign because in a war sold as a war of values, it is
imperative that the coalition forces ensure their behaviour is
exemplary.
Such measures were not taken. In a democracy there is accountability
for error, and the US needs to show that it will accompany its
apologies with immediate action - and that the man responsible for the
abuse takes the rap.
If democracy is a system worth establishing in Iraq, Rumsfeld must go.

Time for you to go, Rummy. You're gonna need the time to prepare for
your trial.
