U.S. Repeating Arms Announces Plans To Close Winchester Plant
Associated Press
January 17 2006, 1:57 PM EST
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- U.S. Repeating Arms said Tuesday that it is
preparing to close its flagship factory in New Haven, where
Winchester rifles have been made for 140 years.
The announcement touched off a lobbying effort by city officials
and union leaders who hoped to find someone to buy the plant
before it closes March 31.
"It's part of who we are as a nation just like it's part of who
we are as a city. It's the gun that won the West," Mayor John
DeStefano said. "What are we going to have, Winchester rifles
manufactured in China? Is this what we're coming to."
Everett Corey, a representative of the International Association
of Machinists District 26, said 186 workers will lose their jobs
if the plant closes.
A human resources manager confirmed closing plans Tuesday but
referred all calls to administrators, who did not immediately
return a phone call.
U.S. Repeating Arms, which is owned by the Herstal Group, a
Belgium company, has said for years that it was on the brink of
closing the plant. The company said sales have fallen off for
years.

"Gun control often serves as a gateway to tyranny. Tyrants from
Hitler to Mao to Stalin have sought to disarm their own
citizens, for the simple reason that unarmed people are easier
to control. Our Founders, having just expelled the British army,
knew that the right to bear arms serves as the guardian of every
other right. This is the principle so often ignored by both
sides in the gun control debate. Only armed citizens can resist
tyrannical government." - Ron Paul

It's no wonder they are losing sales. The current crop of bargain
basment junk they are producing nobody wants. I was truly shocked at
what I saw in a Gun Shop the other day. It said Winchester and it was a
lever action but it rattled like loose change with sharp corners and a
lifeless matt finish and broom handle stock.
The Belgium Owners aren't interested in manufacturing fine or even good
firearms. They bought as a Venture Capatalist. They traded off the
name, cheapened the product and now they are going to sell off what is
left. It is much the same as any retailer buying a "deal" and after
making his profit selling what's left for pennies or scrapping it for
the next "deal."
