Senate Democrats Take the Offensive, on Education and Labor
By SHERYL GAY STOLBERG
WASHINGTON --
The Senate returned to work today after a monthlong summerr vacation,
and Democrats immediately went on the offensive, vowing to increase
financing for education and block a White House proposal that could
strip millions of workers of their right to overtime pay.
As the Senate began debate on a $137.6 billion spending measure for
labor, education and health programs, Senator Tom Harkin, Democrat of
Iowa, said he believed he had the 60 votes needed to pass an amendment
that would block the overtime proposal.
But, he added, "I think it's going to be close."
Other Democrats, including Senator Edward M. Kennedy of Massachussetts
and Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia, plan to introduce amendments that
would increase education spending by more than $10 billion.

Time for the Democrats to get real. The country's working folks have
needs. Dumping cash down a bottomless Iraq pit ain't the way to go.

And dumping it in to a failed govt education system is the way to go?
It was once said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing
over and over and expecting a different result? By that standard govt
education is insanity.
The failures of our education system come mostly from the
politicization of it. Conservatives have been fighting my entire life
to de-fund our education system - while religious conservatives
constantly lobby to keep every negative event in our history out of
our text books, because they don't want their darlings to be taught
"bad things" about our country. And they constantly fight to take
evolution out of science class (without bothering to understand it)
and put creationism in. Then they wonder why their children don't know
anything.
Your statement about insanity is rather on-point here, because those
whom do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. My high school
history book had 1 - count them - 1 paragraph about the Vietnam war.
And nothing about the underpinnings of strife in the middle east.
And here we are in Iraq.

I agree with your points on politicization. However, I wholeheartedly
disagree with the statement that the cons want to de-fund education.
Last year Bush signed one of the largest education spendign bills in
history. Federal spending on education has increased 49% just in the
last two years alone.
