Senator "hang'em high" Byrd Helps the GOP |
Senator Byrd Helps the GOP
Facing a tough re-election fight, Senator Robert Byrd (D-Porkbarrel) has
suddenly transformed himself from the harshest critic of President Bush (who
won WV by 13 percentage points) into a very strange-bedfellows ally of the
President. As this news story indicates, Byrd is singing the praises of John
Roberts...after spending the last four years leading the charge on
filibustering nominees far less conservative. But what is really helpful to
the GOP in the news story is this bit:
One's life is probably in no greater danger in the jungles of deepest
Africa than in the jungles of America's large cities...
That is a quote from Byrd's new book, Child of the Apalachian Coal Fields. I
guess the leopard really can't change his spots - but, hey, its not our
fault that the Democrats have as one of their senior leaders a former Grand
Kleagle (or whatever) of the KKK...really bad turn of phrase there,
Senator...thanks, though; we'll have a lot of fun with it next year.

the party. Then they ran us out."
