Sharon the BOSS - Bush Fails to Live Up to His Dads America-First Mideast Policy |
Herbert Walker Bush actually cut off Grants and Loans to
Israel over settlements and some neocons campaigned for
Clinton in order to retaliate.
Reagan had run-ins with Begin over Israel's '82 invasion
of Lebanon and Israel sent one diplomat to his funeral in
order to retaliate. (We packed Washington DC up, lock
stock and barrel and sent it to the promised land for Rabin's
funeral.)
Looks like Dubya not only volunteers American Armed Forces
for Israel's defense but falls short in the political guts department
in his dealings with our "Banana Republic" on the dole.

Unsettling Talk: Bush's message to Sharon on settlements was right on
The Salt Lake Tribune
http://www.sltrib.com/opinion/ci_2655530
President Bush got two things very right in his meeting with Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon of Israel. He praised Sharon's courageous bid
to evacuate Jewish settlers from Gaza this summer, and he condemned
Sharon's insistence on adding to large Jewish settlements in the West
Bank.
Unfortunately, Sharon indicated quite firmly that he will ignore his
indispensable ally's advice about expanding Jewish housing in the
corridor between East Jerusalem and Maale Adumim, an existing Israeli
town in the West Bank. Sharon's intransigence will justifiably
inflame Palestinian and international hostility to Israel, but it
will win the prime minister points with Jewish zealots who are furious
with him for his plan to abandon the Gaza Strip and four small
settlements in the northern West Bank.
Sharon is not the only leader doing an intricate political dance
here, however. Bush is risking fire from his neo-con base, whose first
commandment is that the United States should give Israel anything it
wants, no questions asked. By standing up to Sharon on the question
of expanding settlements, the president is not only continuing a long
line of U.S. foreign policy, which has opposed Jewish expansion in
the West Bank since 1967. He also is signaling to Palestinians and
the world that the United States is not an unquestioning lapdog of
Israel.
He also is preserving what little remains of U.S. credibility as an
honest broker in the Israeli-Palestinian dispute. Our only quibble
with the president is that he undercut his position by repeating a
statement he made in a letter to Sharon last year, that the situation
on the ground (Israeli settlements) makes it unrealistic to expect
that a final, comprehensive peace between Israel and the Palestinians
would include all of the West Bank, based on the 1967 borders, in a
new Palestinian state. Palestinians, who claim all of the West Bank,
rightly argue that that is a matter for negotiation.
Which is why Sharon's insistence on expanding settlements, which
is a violation of the Road Map, as President Bush pointed out, so
infuriates the Palestinians. More Jewish building in the corridor to
Maale Adumim would cut Palestinians off from East Jerusalem, which
they claim as their capital. That's a deal-breaker.

I don't see oil being the primary reason for us to invade
and intimidate Israel's threats in the Mideast. Cheney
never wanted to go into Iraq in the early '90s and
former Secretary of State James Baker has never
liked the idea. "Oil" is a safer talking point if you like
to avoid ethnic issues though.
McCain, Bush, Forbes and Bower all promised the
"American Jewish Congress" a regime change in
Iraq during a C-SPAN televised fund raiser during
the Republican 2000 primaries.
(IMO, The AJC represents pro-Israel interests rather
than speak for the whole of the US Jewish populace)
The fact that Arab countries are also a pain in the *****
doesn't mean that Americans are obligated to support
unnecessary wars in support of West Bank expansions
at Arabs expense and especially not after doing our
damndest to fix up their neighborhood for them.
Nixon and Kissenger could be roundly booed for their
lack of prescience as well as Reagan and Israel-first
Haig. I thought that Herbert Walker Bush and Baker
were right-on in dealing with some of these arrogant
Likud jackasses.
But I guess it's a different and more costly game under
Dubya's poltroonish tenure.

In Reagan's partial defence however:
I could just see him having a stroke over Blubbergut Sharon's
West Bank expansions after watching he and Begin's show-feud
over Begin and Sharon's antics in Lebanon. I always wondered
why Reagan didn't cut off Israel's war-funds to get them out of
Beirut. (I was young then.)
