Poll records shift among Americans against war
WASHINGTON --
For the first time, a majority of Americans surveyed appear to believe
that the war in Iraq was not worth its cost.
A CNN-USA Today poll released Tuesday found that 54 percent said no
when asked whether "it was worth going to war in Iraq," while 44
percent of those surveyed said yes.
In late March, 56 percent of those in the poll said the Iraq war was
worth it and 41 percent said it was not.

In another first, the poll indicated that Americans appear to be
evenly divided on whether President Bush or Sen. John Kerry would do a
better job of handling Iraq.
The poll found that 48 percent of adults surveyed thought the
president would better handle "the situation in Iraq," compared with
45 percent for Kerry.
People had strongly favored Bush over Kerry on the Iraq question in
previous months.
As recently as March, 54 percent of those polled thought Bush would do
a better job of handling Iraq, compared with 39 percent for Kerry.
Overwhelmingly, Americans said they were bothered by the U.S.
military's abuse of Iraqi prisoners--54 percent said they were
bothered "a great deal" and 25 percent said they were bothered "a fair
amount."
The poll of 1,003 adults was taken May 7-9.
Also Tuesday, the nation's largest association of mainline Protestant
and Orthodox Christian churches said that U.S. policy in Iraq has
become so destructive that the United Nations should take over.
The National Council of Churches said in a pastoral letter that giving
control to the UN was the only way to create "lasting peace."
The council represents 36 denominations and has been highly critical
of the war.
