Study in Tertullian |
TERTULLIAN
Being a oness Pentecostal, I find it hard to understand the position
that Trinitarians have on the Godhead and there adamant stance on the
trinity. I guess this post could hash over the same old arguments as,
The word Trinity is not in the bible, or no one has ever proved that
any one was baptized using mat. 28:19. You can even argue that every
triune doctrine such as Gen. "Let Us make man in our own image" can
equally be interpreted to support the oness theology. What I want to
do in this post is to look into the foundation of the triune doctrine
by examining one founding fathers papers, Tertullian.
Why was Tertullian manuscripts chosen over a number of others.
First he is one of the prolific writers of that time. He also was
pre-Constatine and after Constatine's Christian proclamation. He was
present at the early church councils and a major contributor of
doctrine presented by these councils. Also I believe that the
manuscripts of Tertullian are an insight to the religious thought of
the day. Interesting I was very surprised what these manuscripts
reveled of the man and his beliefs.
Tertullian earliest writings starts by complaining of the persecution
that the Emperors commits against Christians. He offers many examples
of why Christians should be treated with the highest regards
Explaining that Christians are more productive, less prone to commit
crime, and regularly pay their taxes. The only disparaging report
that Tertullian has is that Christians are least likely to frequent
Inns (taverns) and pagan temples. This leads Tertullian to speculate
that it's these latter proprietors of temples and Inns that complain
about Christian and are recommending persecutions. Tertullian further
speculates that the patrons of theses establishments are of the baser
sort and cause much anxiety to the empire then any Christian has ever.
Tertullian continues this argument to a degree for a number of books.
Reading these earlier works of Tertullian we see the nature of
Tertullian and what he's like. For no one can ever claim that
Tertullian was not a learned man. His writing style and arguments of
subject matter is second to none. This detail positions that
Tertullian takes gives us a good understanding of this author.
First note is that Tertullian subject matter is almost completely of
his own opinion. For rarely does he offer critical examples where he
has derived his arguments. He mentioned many times that temple
worshippers and people who frequent Inns are of the baser sort. Yet
Tertullian, as far as we know, has never interviewed any patrons of
these other establishments. He just makes claim that the Christian
position is far above all other peoples that are not Christians. Will
see this style of persuasions throughout his papers. This makes his
papers a difficult read in that without understanding completely the
other peoples positions it's hard to believe that Tertullian is right.
The other noticeable thing we see in Tertullian writings is lack of a
spiritual position. It's not that he was not knowledgeable about
biblical scriptures, for he quotes many verse. He just never mentions
any spiritual wisdom from G-D, yet he fully believed in G-D. His
writings is void of any mention of personal prayer & fasting, a message
from G-D. I believe that G-d ____, etc.. One thing to his credit he
also never mentions and Angles appeared to him or some other heavenly
aberrations, as some earlier writers have done. However this lack of
any acknowledgment of a personal comforter would seem that Tertullian
spiritual life fell short of biblical testimonies. This omission is
very evident in other manuscripts by Tertullian.
Tertullian letters are best reviewed in 3 parts this being the first.
The next post on Tertullian covers a period after (I believe)
Constatine assumes power and proclaims Christianity as the Roman norm.
For he stops complaining about Persecution, and begins his attacks
against what he deems as heretics.
When I started this study into Tertullian I did not know what to expect
about this Papist early church father. I soon discovered that
Tertullian was a very good read, and I would recommend all Christians
to read these manuscripts. As we shall see Tertullian, though,
opinionated and a typical Romanist, offers a very insightful look at
the early papist church. So I hope all will read further post on these
news groups about this man Tertullian.
