Limbaugh's beef has no weight
Al Franken now has the opportunity for a sequel to his best seller,
"Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot."
He could call it "Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Crybaby."
The conservative talk-show titan and his dittoheads are casting him as
a martyr for the First Amendment after ESPN pressured him to resign as
a sports analyst last week.
ESPN blanched at Limbaugh's remark that the press overstated the
abilities of Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb because he
was black.
"Sorry to say this," said Limbaugh, "I think what we've had here is a
little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous
that a black quarterback do well."
The multimillionaire conservative radio star is neither victim nor
martyr here.
Limbaugh's constitutional right to free speech is intact.
What he lost was his right to paid speech.
And there's a huge difference.

Limbaugh can spew his dubious theories without censure on his own dime
and his own show.
When he's on the ESPN payroll, he has to follow the network's
insistence on relevant and informed commentary with a broad appeal.
Limbaugh's recipe for a successful talk-show sauce -- mix vast amounts
of opinion with contrived passion, throw in lots of name-calling and
salt lightly with facts -- didn't prove as palatable to sports fans,
who actually expect NFL commentators to highlight the plays rather
than their prejudices.
McNabb's stats reveal a pretty good quarterback.
He's been named to the Pro Bowl three times in four seasons and led
his team to two consecutive NFC championship games.
Those facts meant nothing to Limbaugh, who says his expertise is life
rather than football.
Well, life ought to have taught Limbaugh that what goes around comes
around.
He led the blather industry's condemnation of the Dixie Chicks for
band member Natalie Maines' criticism of President Bush.
He encouraged a boycott of their music, dubbed the trio "Saddam's
Angels" and gave them this advice:
"Just shut up. You're here to sell records, not make a political
statement."
Too bad he didn't remember his own counsel when he got behind the
microphone at ESPN.

Actually,
Rush was lambasting the LIBERAL SPORTS WRITERS
McNabbs stats are rather middle of the road.
He isnt
Steve Young
Joe Montana
John Elway
Randall Cunningham
Steve McNair
Daunte Cullpepper
Michael Vick
Warren Moon
He is in all reality a larger version of what Kordell Stewert is NOW.

You are both right and wrong. Yes, Rush was lambasting liberal writers,
which is exactly why he should have been canned. Had he simply argued that
McNabb was overrated, it would have been a simple sorts debate. But becuase
he is so steeped in his personal poitical wierdness and demagogery, he
couldn't keep himself from making it a generalized, racial/social comment,
thus introducing the kind of partisan social commentary he had agreed to NOT
bring to the table.
In regards to McNabb, you are wrong. While esome of his stats are middle of
the road, his results are not: Philadelphia has won more games over the last
three years than any other team. End of story.

It's not some of his stats, it's most of them are middle of the road.
And the fact that Philly has won a lot of games over the last three
years is exactly the point that rush was making, which is that the
defense carried the team in spite of mediocre numbers of the QB.

No, that is not the point Rush was making. That is the point he SHOULD have
been making. But he is so steeped in his own weirdness that he turned a
legitimate, if debatable, athletic question into a social commentary on the
influence of the "libbruls." This is why he was, appropriately, shown the
door.
McNabb's stats are not the measure of what he does for or means to that
team.
