In the closing days of the nominating season, barely six weeks after
Kerry won the first contest in Iowa, it seemed as though the general
election was long under way.
In a sense, because of the structure of the Democratic Party's
nominating calendar, it was.
Of the 17 states where Bush is preparing to air television
commercials, places where his margin of victory was narrow four years
ago, Kerry already has campaigned in a dozen.
Firing up Democrats in battleground states at such an early stage,
party strategists say, gives Kerry an advantage that Al Gore did not
enjoy four years ago.
"I give George Bush more credit for firing up the Democratic base than
anybody," said Mike Erlandson, the chairman of the Minnesota state
party.
"The selection of the nominee doesn't matter as much. People are
focused as much or more on George Bush."
Last week, during a rally at Macalester College in St. Paul, Kerry
told voters he believes the 2004 race is the most important election
in more than a generation.
Never before in his lifetime, Kerry told his audience, has a White
House been so "tilted against the working class."
