There is the cigarette tax which tax people for doing something unhealthy.
Taxes has been the government's way of controlling our society. I think it
is called social engineering. I predict some kind of fat tax be put in to
law over the next 5 to 10 years. This would tax foods that the government
(FDA) decides is unhealthy for it's citizens. Maybe they do not tax the
products directly but they may instead go with a higher tariff on sugar or
something like that. Congress would want to take the American food companies
on directly. Even just the whiff of such a tax would make American food
companies throw around tons of political contribution money to prevent it
just like the tobacco companies do. (Sounds like win-win to me.)
It is a real shame American (like myself) just can't learn to just eat less.
Part of me thinks that people should be allowed to do whatever they want to
as long as they do not effect other people, but history tells us that the
U.S. government does not allow it. Is it cheaper to have people die of
complications due to obesity (being too fat) and cheaper to pass laws to
prevent it? It really all comes down to what can our health care system
support. You have to LOVE capitalism.
Go to a local grocery store and count the number of people that you think
are not overweight. I think you would be surprised that you find. Go to a
local park and notice how many people are there over 30 doing some kind of
exercise. There are some people but think of the number of people that live
in our town. TV, video game, and the Internet allows us to entertain
ourselves without moving. Things will change. They always do.
