Abeles, until rather recently, the main meaning of "entrepreneur" in
French was a contractor, and that's the only meaning listed in my 1967
large French dictionary. In the international business terminology of
Elizabethan times or the 17th century, an "Unternehmer" in German or
"Entrepreneur" in French or "Undertaker" in English was a financial
backer or large investor, who put up capital for a particular business
venture (such as a merchant's trading voyage) in return for a share of
the expected profits. This fits in with the traditional French attitude
towards wealth, which was that only a very safe investment (preferably
one backed by the government) would persuade the gold coins to come out
from under the mattresses. The idea of a bold brash innovative pushing
reinvesting "self-made man" of the American businessman type was hardly
a French ideal.
