Object: The President Abandons Any Pretense of Conservative Values.
I thought the failure to defend the Southern border a sufficient reason to
refrain from supporting the President in 2004. (No, of course, I could not
support Kerry or Nader, who were equally uanacceptable.)
I thought that the farcical speech in New Orleans, promising
$200,000,000,000 to impress the former slum dwellers that the President was
on their side a sufficient reason to repudiate the President as in any sense
a Conservative.
I thought the May 15, 2006 speech on Immigration, worthy of a direct rebuke
in http://pages.prodigy.net/krtq73aa/bush1.htm
as I had earlier responded to the confused and intellectually vacant Second
Inaugural Address in http://pages.prodigy.net/krtq73aa/debate2.htm.
But never have I heard a more contemptible pandering to all that is wrong in
America over the past two generations, than in the President's address to
the NAACP, this morning. The man does not have a clue as to the history or
values of the Nation he is supposed to be leading. When the man suggests
that a Leftwing movement was necessary to achieve American purpose, he
slanders not only the Founding Fathers, but a dozen generations of the
settler stock, which formulated our institutions, our cultural heritage, and
our ascent to prominence in the world.
There will still be some who claim to be Conservative who will still defend
him.
But those who care about the integrity of our institutions, our public
discourse, our history and the legacy we pass on to our posterity, will
repudiate this contemptible and pathetic successor to an Office once graced
by men of the magnitude and nobility of a Washington and a Jefferson.

Not at all. Let face the reality. We are not looking at a failure of GWB
only. What is actually going on it is a general failure of the conservative
ideology, as always.
The core value of conservatism it is fear and opposition to changes required
by the society to evolve. Conservatism is not linked to a party or another.
Today in US conservatives are in majority in Republican and Libertarian
party. In former communist countries, conservatives are into communist,
socialists or other radical left parties.
By everything Bush did, he prove to be a clear conservative.
He defend and encourage the existing corporatist society and oppose the
workers and intellectuals, and he is doing this into a society where due to
globalization is on the verge of collapse due to ... corporatism.
So yes, GWB seems a clear conservative following an obsolete conservative
ideology.

If that goober acknowledged that progress in this country is due to, as
you claim, "the left wing", then I'm surprised. I've not read about
his remarks, but if he said this, then it's one of the very few things
he's said in public life that may be correct.
Progress in the civil rights of Americans certainly was not due to
support from conservatives. Conservatives, by nature, and definition,
are RESISTANT to progress and change... that's why they're called
conservatives.
Progressives, on the other hand, realize that nations, just as
individuals, are works in progress and that you seek to better your
nation, as yourself, when you change and progress with new ideas and
solutions.
So, if Bush ***** conservatives by finally saying something
truthful, well, as I said, I'm surprised.
But, as you say, he's not really a conservative, himself. Karl Rove
and him contrived a plan to garner votes by exploiting conservatives,
particularly religious conservatives, way back in Texas, a project Rove
started on before he even met Bush. When they hooked up with *****
Cheney and his glum band of neocons, they promoted policies that run
counter to conservatism, all the while signifying that they were
conservatives themselves. They're not at all.
