The uber rich - the over mighty subjects of our age |
Note: In the Middle Ages, England, like the rest of Europe was plagued
by over-mighty subjects, men who were so personally powerful that they
usurped the power of the king simply by being who they were. Many
countries continued to experience the problem well beyond the the
mediaeval period.
Today we like to flatter ourselves that we are a democracy and every
man is equal, with no man being so personally strong as to subvert the
power of the people. In fact, we have the same problem of over-mighty
subjects in a modern form and one which is becoming an increasing
problem, namely, the development of super-plutocrats, whose wealth and
connections effectively place them above the law and who owe no
allegiance to any country or people.
As kings had to destroy the power of great nobles, so we need to
destroy the power of great plutocrats. RH
