They Really Are All Americans, Now |
They Really Are All Americans, Now
By Mark Noonan at 09:14 AM
Remember that famous French headline after 9/11? "We're All Americans Now"?
It was, of course, just boilerplate - a French way of trying to morally cash
in on 3,000 American dead...for years since then, the world has watched,
mostly with delight at our difficulties, as America and a few allies have
had to fight a long, bloody and trying war against the Islamo-fascists
terrorists who are the enemy of all mankind. Victor Davis Hanson notes that,
just perhaps, the rest of the world is waking up to its peril:
First the terrorists of the Middle East went after the Israelis. From 1967
we witnessed 40 years of bombers, child murdering, airline hijacking,
suicide murdering, and gratuitous shooting. We in the West usually cried
crocodile tears, and then came up with all sorts of reasons to allow such
Middle Eastern killers a pass...
...But Europe was supposedly different. Unlike the United States, it was
correct on the Middle East, and disarmed after the Cold War. Indeed, the
European Union was pacifistic, socialist, and guilt-ridden about former
colonialism...
...After Holland, Madrid, and London, European operatives go to Israel not
to harangue Jews about the West Bank, but to receive tips about preventing
suicide bombings. And the cowboy Patriot Act to now-panicked European
parliaments perhaps seems not so illiberal after all.
As it was in the past, so it is today - join or die; we can all hang
together or we can hang separately. The civilized world is at peril - the
people we fight will kill and enslave us all unless we destroy them first.
The United States is overwhelmingly powerful, but we really can't do it all
on our own - we certainly can't do it if part of the civilized world is
subsidising our enemies and providing safe haven and welfare payments for
the purveyors of Islamo-fascism. It is to be hope that, eventually, the best
and bravest of the whole world will join the best and bravest of the United
States, the United Kingdom, Australia and other allies in this fight for the
future of humanity.

This is just silliness.
