All Things Considered, April 24, 2006 · A recently announced plan to
reduce the effects of global warming would send a huge glass shield
into space, lining it up to deflect 2 percent of the sunlight bound
for the Earth. Robert Siegel talks with Roger Angel, professor of
Astronomy and Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona, where he
started the Steward Observatory Mirror Lab.

They're idiots. Pollution is what caused the loss of ozone in
the first place, and lately there have been some interesting
developments in the debate over global warming and pollution, IF you
consider the litany of lies paid for by industrialists to be
interesting.
First we were told there was global warming, and it could
become a real problem eventually.
Then we were told it had been "proven" that global warming is
a myth.
Now we have two arguments that have been floated almost
simultaneously; 1), that global warming is the concern, and not
pollution of air and water, and 2), that pollution may be a good
thing, since it reduces the amount of sunlight hitting the Earth. You
can see where these idiots are taking this debate, can't you? You
CANNOT depend on government and industry sources for your news!

"Global Dimming" is the old Global Cooling hypothesis of the 1970.
Combine this with Global Warming and you can explain any kind of
climate trend. Handy eh?

Glass???
Are they serious? There are many problems with such a notion, starting
with its manufacture.
[1] The problem size. OK, 2% of sunlight. The Earth's radius is 6378 km.
This translates to a disc (as viewed hypothetically from Sol) of 127.8
trillion square meters. 2% of that is 2.56 trillion square meters.
Assuming 6mm glass that's 15.34 billion cubic meters or about 40
billion metric tonnes of glass. At $9/metric tonne that translates into
about $360B just for fabrication. The current payroll of all US firms
manufacturing glass of some sort was $569M in 1999.
http://www.census.gov/epcd/susb/1999/us/US327211.HTM
I don't know the business size but any way one cuts it that's quite a bit
of glass to boost to the Lagrange point. (Orbital glass simply won't
work; the Sun span 1/2 degree in our sky, which means only 1 in 720
mirrors at most will be effective, assuming the mirrors are boosted into
an orbit at or near the Ecliptic.)
[2] Boost costs are apparently about $50/kg. To boost that 40 billion
metric tonnes, one is looking at a $2000 trillion cost. That's more
than the total GDP since the United States' founding (in current dollars).
The fabrication costs are bad but the boost costs are horrendous.
One might shave some off these costs -- e.g. 0.6 mm glass would cost only
1/10 as much. The trouble is that 0.6 mm glass would be extremely fragile.

#191,

It's still legal to go .sigless.
