Lott Says He'll Resign by End of Year
PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) --
Mississippi Sen. Trent Lott, the Senate's No. 2 Republican, announced
Monday he will retire from the Senate before January, ending a 35-year
career in Congress in which he rose to his party's top Senate job only
to lose it over a remark interpreted as support for segregation.
"It's time for us to do something else," Lott said, speaking for
himself and his wife Tricia at a news conference.

I couldn't agree more. Good riddance to the old bigot.
And he really needs to do something about that lacquered hair. Maybe he and
Sam Donaldson could work on that together.

The ignorant crackers in Mississippi will no doubt elect another Republic
candidate next year, but the Democratic Party should put some money into the
state and make them work for it. The Republics are going to be playing
defense on so many fronts that they won't know what hit them.

A little more involved than that.

Barbour will appoint Lott's replacement, who will serve until the 2008 elections,

That was the initial report but I heard on the news that state law might
require an election in 90 days from the resignation, and Lott is committed
to resigning THIS year so the new lobbyist law doesn't apply to him.
