Venezuelan leader endangering region with increasing ties to =

Recent high-level Venezuelan military defectors say President Hugo =
Chavez gave $1 million to al-Qaida shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, =
terrorist attack on the United States.=20
Air Force Maj. Juan Diaz Castillo, formerly a pilot for the =
Venezuelan leader, was smuggled to Miami last week where he is warning =
the U.S. of what he calls Chavez's dismissal of the constitution and his =
ties to terrorism in collaboration with Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.=20

"I must warn America about Chavez," Diaz said. "He is a danger, =
not just to his own people but to the whole region."=20
Diaz is one of more than 100 military officers who have quit the =
Chavez regime as the president tries to hang on to power amid a =
month-long general strike that has cut off oil exports, his primary =
source of income.=20
For the past 77 days, many of the officers have relocated to Plaza =
Altamira, a major square in Caracas, vowing to protest along with =
thousands of Venezuelans until Chavez leaves. Calling themselves members =
of a pro-democracy resistance movement against Chavez, the officers have =
set up a website in English, MilitaresDemocraticos.com, through which =
they warn of the president's alleged efforts to make the country a =
terrorist state.=20
Among the resisters are the former military attache in Washington, =
Enrique Medina Gomez; former head of the navy, Hector Ramirez; ex-U.N. =
attache for Venezuela, Carlos Alfonzo Martinez; the inspector general of =
the National Guard; and nearly 30 other generals.=20

In addition to his purported al-Qaida links, Chavez has traveled =
to Iraq, Iran, Syria, North Korea, China and Libya to build ties and is =
supporting FARC, the rebel group in Colombia.=20
Diaz says Chavez transferred $1 million to the Taliban through =
Venezuelan Ambassador Walter Marquez in New Delhi, designating $900,000 =
to al-Qaida for its relocation efforts and $100,000 to the then-Afghan =
government for food and clothing, according to =
MilitaresDemocraticos.com.=20
The story was the top headline in Sunday newspapers across =
Venezuela, further galvanizing popular resistance to Chavez.=20
Over the weekend, threats on Diaz's family at his home in =
Valencia, Venezuela, prompted him to have them moved to an undisclosed =
location with the help of colleagues in the resistance movement, =
according to an American businessman who helped bring Diaz to the U.S.=20
Diaz is a "man of highest integrity," who has risked his life to =
speak out, Shane Conner told WND.=20
Conner has made numerous trips to Venezuela in the past two years =
and developed close contacts among some of the military resisters. The =
owner of ki4u.com, he sells radiation protection equipment to =
governments, militaries and private individuals
Open channel with al-Qaida=20
Diaz, who piloted the president's Airbus jet, said he was put in =
charge of an initial plan in September 2001 to transport cargo to the =
Taliban via three Hercules C-130 airplanes. According to Diaz, however, =
Chavez's chief of staff decided instead to only send money after =
learning that the cost of transportation outweighed the value of the =
goods.=20
Asked for a response to claims of Venezuela's ties to al-Qaida and =
terrorism, the State Department's Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs =
said that as a rule it does not comment on allegations of that kind.=20
Diaz said that Chavez sent the aid to open a direct channel of =
communication with al-Qaida.=20
"It was a way of telling Osama bin Laden that he had a friend in =
Hugo Chavez," he said, according to MilitaresDemocraticos.com.=20
The Venezuelan leader had tried unsuccessfully to contact al-Qaida =
through Libya, Diaz said.=20
The military dissidents note that Chavez disappeared during the 48 =
hours after the 9-11 attacks. After emerging, he told foreign reporters =
he opposed terrorism but said on Venezuelan television that the "United =
States brought the attacks upon itself, for its arrogant imperialist =
foreign policy."=20
Chavez expressed admiration for the attacks in private, according =
to Gen. Pedro Pereira, formerly the highest-ranking general in the =
Venezuelan air force and still a Chavez loyalist in 2001.=20
"With 9-11, bin Laden showed the whole world that he was a force =
to be reckoned with. This impressed Hugo to no end," the general =
remembered, according to MilitaresDemoraticos.com.=20
The day after the attack, Chavez supporters held a celebration in =
which they burned the American flag in the main square of Caracas.=20
Cash bore fruit=20
After scrapping the plan to transport supplies to al-Qaida in =
Afghanistan, responsibility for the mission was handed over from Diaz to =
Carlos Otaiza, brother of Army Capt. Eliezer Otaiza Castillo, former =
head of Chavez's secret service.=20
Diaz, though he no longer was in charge, still "saw a lot of what =
was going on" from his vantage point in the presidential palace.=20
The cash was transferred in late September to Marquez in India, =
since Venezuela does not have representation in Afghanistan or Pakistan. =
Diaz said that on Oct. 3, 2001, a Venezuelan government representative =
contacted Kris Janowski of the United Nations High Commissioner for =
Refugees in Pakistan to inform him of a humanitarian delivery for the =
Taliban to create a cover story for the cash designated for al-Qaida.=20
Diaz said the cash bore fruit and a line of communication opened.=20
"In the last few months of 2001, and all throughout 2002, more and =
more Arabs started arriving" in Caracas, Diaz said, according to =
MilitaresDemocraticos.com.=20
The Arabs received special treatment from Chavez, Otaiza and Ramon =
Rodriguez Chacin, former head of the Interior and Justice Ministry under =
Chavez and now, according to the Venezuelan press, a "party boss in the =
Chavez political machine" who has operated under multiple identities.=20
Diaz, noting that revelation of these facts and others put =
military resisters in even greater danger, said an attempt was made on =
his life on Dec. 16 by Chavez's secret service, the DISIP, on the =
freeway between Caracas and his home in Valencia.=20
The major went underground and was smuggled out of the country in =
the hull of a fishing boat on Christmas Eve by friends in the resistance =
movement. He stayed in Curazao, in the Dutch Antilles, until he could =
arrange safe passage to the United States.=20
Chavez is growing increasingly desperate in his hold on power, =
Diaz says, refusing to allow free and democratic elections and vowing to =
stay in power until "at least 2021."=20
The president does not care what people think, he said.=20
"Referendum to remove me? That is not possible; don't waste time. =
I will not go in a referendum. I say that to the country and the world. =
It's like this: I won't go," Chavez said in November.=20
Diaz said that Chavez tries to emulate Castro.=20
"It sounds bizarre, but Chavez is a bizarre man," Diaz said, =
according to MilitaresDemocraticos.com. "He was already starting to go =
off the rails in 2001, and he wanted direct contacts to all the major =
terror groups in the world."=20
Two Miami radio-show hosts known for playing outrageous pranks on =
the air got Chavez on a private line yesterday by pretending that Castro =
was calling him from Havana, the Miami Herald reported.=20
Resistance a family affair=20
Conner said the military dissidents' stakeout at Plaza Atalmira =
has focused and re-energized a resistance that became dispirited and =
fragmented after the failed coup attempt in April.=20
On his most recent trip, last month, Conner described the people =
who represent the resistance in the square as "elderly couples with =
canes, families and kids with bicycles, all waving the flag."=20
Conner points out that as the world's fifth largest oil producer, =
many Venezuelans enjoy a prosperous lifestyle but have seen it erode =
under the past five years of Chavez rule. Even the poor, who were =
Chavez's base of support, are turning against him as promises go =
unfufilled.=20
Nevertheless, while the dire economic situation was once the focus =
of opposition, since the military began making its revelations, Chavez's =
purported terrorist ties and "Cubanization" of the country have taken =
center stage.=20
"These people know exactly what they are up against," Conner said. =
"Most of the banners have a theme of 'No Cuba here!'"=20
Demonstrations are taking place not only in the square but across =
Venezuela.=20
"They love their country and are trying to get it back," he said. =
"Their weapons are their voices and banging pots and pans."=20
The protests have not gone on without a backlash, however. Conner =
said that on the evening of Dec. 6, he heard what sounded at first like =
fireworks from the crowd below his hotel room overlooking Plaza =
Altamira.=20
Suddenly, he realized the sounds were not part of the protest as a =
dozen staccato shots soon were followed by screams. When he looked out =
the window, he saw hundreds of unarmed civilians running and diving for =
cover.=20
Five died and 29 were wounded by gunmen, according to the official =
report.=20
To his amazement, however, less than 40 minutes later, about =
one-third of the original crowd of 2,000 came back into the open, while =
the blood was "still wet and glistening," and defiantly resumed their =
program, he said.=20
Noting that cameras relayed the scene around the nation, Conner =
said he hoped the event would later be seen as the turning point for the =
end of the Chavez regime.=20
The recently published global attitude survey by the Pew Research =
Center in Washington shows 82 percent of Venezuelans have a favorable =
attitude toward the U.S., the highest of all 44 countries polled.=20
Also, 79 percent favor the U.S. war on terrorism, with just 20 =
percent opposed.

Are you stupid enough to believe Chavez would give al Qaeda a million
dollars and think it wouldn't be spread across every newspaper in the U.S.?
This is no better than the lies you spread about Cuba in an attempt to
tighten U.S. sanctions.

Karl Rove's White House " Murder, Inc."

SEP, 2004- On September 15, 2001, just four days after the 9-11 attacks,
CIA Director George Tenet provided President [sic] Bush with a Top Secret
"Worldwide Attack Matrix"-a virtual license to kill targets deemed to be a
threat to the United States in some 80 countries around the world. The Tenet
plan, which was subsequently approved by Bush, essentially reversed the
executive orders of four previous U.S. administrations that expressly
prohibited political assassinations.
According to high level European intelligence officials, Bush's counselor,
Karl Rove, used the new presidential authority to silence a popular Lebanese
Christian politician who was planning to offer irrefutable evidence that
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon authorized the massacre of hundreds of
Palestinian men, women, and children in the Beirut refugee camps of Sabra
and Shatilla in 1982. In addition, Sharon provided the Lebanese forces who
carried out the grisly task. At the time of the massacres, Elie Hobeika was
intelligence chief of Lebanese Christian forces in Lebanon who were battling
Palestinians and other Muslim groups in a bloody civil war. He was also the
chief liaison to Israeli Defense Force (IDF) personnel in Lebanon. An
official Israeli inquiry into the massacre at the camps, the Kahan
Commission, merely found Sharon "indirectly" responsible for the slaughter
and fingered Hobeika as the chief instigator.
The Kahan Commission never called on Hobeika to offer testimony in his
defense. However, in response to charges brought against Sharon before a
special war crimes court in Belgium, Hobeika was urged to testify against
Sharon, according to well-informed Lebanese sources. Hobeika was prepared to
offer a different version of events than what was contained in the Kahan
report. A 1993 Belgian law permitting human rights prosecutions was unusual
in that non-Belgians could be tried for violations against other
non-Belgians in a Belgian court. Under pressure from the Bush
administration, the law was severely amended and the extra territoriality
provisions were curtailed.
Hobeika headed the Lebanese forces intelligence agency since the mid- 1970s
and he soon developed close ties to the CIA. He was a frequent visitor to
the CIA's headquarters at Langley, Virginia. After the Syrian invasion of
Lebanon in 1990, Hobeika held a number of cabinet positions in the Lebanese
government, a proxy for the Syrian occupation authorities. He also served in
the parliament. In July 2001, Hobeika called a press conference and
announced he was prepared to testify against Sharon in Belgium and revealed
that he had evidence of what actually occurred in Sabra and Shatilla.
Hobeika also indicated that Israel had flown members of the South Lebanon
Army (SLA) into Beirut International Airport in an Israeli Air Force C130
transport plane. In full view of dozens of witnesses, including members of
the Lebanese army and others, SLA troops under the command of Major Saad
Haddad were slipped into the camps to commit the massacres. The SLA troops
were under the direct command of Ariel Sharon and an Israeli Mossad agent
provocateur named Rafi Eitan. Hobeika offered evidence that a former U.S.
ambassador to Lebanon was aware of the Israeli plot. In addition, the IDF
had placed a camera in a strategic position to film the Sabra and Shatilla
massacres. Hobeika was going to ask that the footage be released as part of
the investigation of Sharon.
After announcing he was willing to testify against Sharon, Hobeika became
fearful for his safety and began moves to leave Lebanon. Hobeika was not
aware that his threats to testify against Sharon had triggered a series of
fateful events that reached well into the White House and Sharon's office.
On January 24, 2002, Hobeika's car was blown up by a remote controlled bomb
placed in a parked Mercedes along a street in the Hazmieh section of Beirut.
The bomb exploded when Hobeika and his three associates, Fares Souweidan,
Mitri Ajram, and Waleed Zein, were driving their Range Rover past the
TNT-laden Mercedes at 9:40 am Beirut time. The Range Rover's four passengers
were killed in the explosion. In case Hobeika's car had taken another route
through the neighborhood, two additional parked cars, located at two other
choke points, were also rigged with TNT. The powerful bomb wounded a number
of other people on the street. Other parked cars were destroyed and
buildings and homes were damaged. The Lebanese president, prime minister,
and interior minister all claimed that Israeli agents were behind the
attack.
It is noteworthy that the State Department's list of global terrorist
incidents for 2002 worldwide failed to list the car bombing attack on
Hobeika and his party. The White House wanted to ensure the attack was
censored from the report. The reason was simple: the attack ultimately had
Washington's fingerprints on it.
High level European intelligence sources now report that Karl Rove
personally coordinated Hobeika's assassination. The hit on Hobeika employed
Syrian intelligence agents. Syrian President Bashar Assad was trying to
curry favor with the Bush administration in the aftermath of 9-11 and was
more than willing to help the White House. In addition, Assad's father,
Hafez Assad, had been an ally of Bush's father during Desert Storm, a period
that saw Washington give a "wink and a nod" to Syria's occupation of
Lebanon. Rove wanted to help Sharon avoid any political embarrassment from
an in absentia trial in Brussels where Hobeika would be a star witness. Rove
and Sharon agreed on the plan to use Syrian Military Intelligence agents to
assassinate Hobeika. Rove saw Sharon as an indispensable ally of Bush in
ensuring the loyalty of the Christian evangelical and Jewish voting blocs in
the United States. Sharon saw the plan to have the United States coordinate
the hit as a way to mask all connections to Jerusalem.
The Syrian hit team was ordered by Assef Shawkat, the number two man in
Syrian military intelligence and a good friend and brother in law of Syrian
President Bashar Assad. Assad's intelligence services had already cooperated
with U.S. intelligence in resorting to unconventional methods to extract
information from al Qaeda detainees deported to Syria from the United States
and other countries in the wake of 9-11. The order to take out Hobeika was
transmitted by Shawkat to Roustom Ghazali, the head of Syrian military
intelligence in Beirut. Ghazali arranged for the three remote controlled
cars to be parked along Hobeika's route in Hazmieh; only few hundred yards
from the Barracks of Syrian Special Forces which are stationed in the area
near the Presidential palace , the ministry of Defense and various
Government and officers quarters . This particular area is covered 24/7 by a
very sophisticated USA multi-agency surveillance system to monitor Syrian
and Lebanese security activities and is a " Choice " area to live in for its

The plan to kill Hobeika had all the necessary caveats and built-in denial
mechanisms. If the Syrians were discovered beforehand or afterwards, Karl
Rove and his associates in the Pentagon's Office of Special Plans would be
ensured plausible deniability.
Hobeika's CIA intermediary in Beirut, a man only referred to as "Jason" by
Hobeika, was a frequent companion of the Lebanese politician during official
and off-duty hours. During Hobeika's election campaigns for his
parliamentary seat, Jason was often in Hobeika's office offering support and
advice. After Hobeika's assassination, Jason became despondent over the
death of his colleague. Eventually, Jason disappeared abruptly from Lebanon
and reportedly later emerged in Pakistan.
Karl Rove's involvement in the assassination of Hobeika may not have been
the last "hit" he ordered to help out Sharon. In March 2002, a few months
after Hobeika's assassination, another Lebanese Christian with knowledge of
Sharon's involvement in the Sabra and Shatilla massacres was gunned down
along with his wife in Sao Paulo, Brazil. A bullet fired at Michael Nassar's
car flattened one of his tires. Nassar pulled into a gasoline station for
repairs. A professional assassin, firing a gun with a silencer, shot Nassar
and his wife in the head, killing them both instantly. The assailant fled
and was never captured. Nassar was also involved with the Phalange militia
at Sabra and Shatilla. Nassar was also reportedly willing to testify against
Sharon in Belgium and, as a nephew of SLA Commander General Antoine Lahd,
may have had important evidence to bolster Hobeika's charge that Sharon
ordered SLA forces into the camps to wipe out the Palestinians.
Based on what European intelligence claims is concrete intelligence on
Rove's involvement in the assassination of Hobeika, the Bush administration
can now add political assassination to its laundry list of other misdeeds,
from lying about the reasons to go to war to the torture tactics in
violation of the Geneva Conventions that have been employed by the Pentagon
and "third country" nationals at prisons in Iraq and Guantanamo Bay.
